The Magic Wok

Magic Wok
Michael sent me a picture of The Magic Wok now there is a brand new sign. He mentioned some time back that they needed to replace the older faded sign with something new.

The name Magic Wok can be found on a lots of Chinese Restaurants worldwide but I don’t know its origin.

There was once a TV show called The Magic Wok, and a recipe book based on the show. The magic could be how versatile the wok is for cooking stir fries. Woks are recent imports to the UK.

Or perhaps there is a Fairy Story about a a young lady whose Mother’s restaurant is failing and about how she is given an old wok for being kind. Then one day the Prince comes to dine at the restaurant. On that day they need all their usual woks, and even use that old wok to cook the stir fried rice. Tasting the stir fried rice the Prince is enchanted. He marries the young lady and they live happily until the day she looses the old wok.

Fairy Stories are universal: Cinderella meets Aladdin.
The new signage is neat. Perhaps a dragon mural on the bus shelter would enhance the view further, Banksy, where are you ?

This was a butchers shop in the 80’s, I used to get sent there by my mum with a shopping list and a carrier bag and the guys working were kind to a kid with no idea what he was buying!

I seem to remember this place originally belonged to a Mr Yip? He had a Chinese restaurant where Sami’s fast food place is in Ock St, Former Abingdonian do you remember Sid Orchard? The landlord of the Ox Pub next door( now Tesco express) he was an amazing guy who played/acted in the old time music halls, he’d get on the piano and knock a tune out at the drop of a hat, he drove a Reliant three wheeler!

I think the Golden Kitchen used to be where Sami’s is now. It then moved further down the road when Walter’s, the transport cafe, closed.
