It was a sunny day in Abingdon.
Demolition experts have moved into to the ex Bellinger Garage on Ock Street – after the new care home got planning permission on appeal.
Nearby work has been underway pollarding the Plane trees on Conduit Road. The road has been kept open and the tree surgeons pass down a log at a time on the one side, allowing cars to pass on the other.
Have you seen the rubbish on facebook regarding this?
Pollarding has taken place periodically for as long as I can remember and the trees have flourished. Someone has made up a story about this being done because residents are objecting to the falling leaves (that are removed regularly by the council in autumn) and sadly he has been believed by others.
People are gullible and it is easy to generate outrage. Those poplar will flourish and will soon be in new leaf again. A friend of mine grows roses; he is savage with the secateurs and his roses thrive.
Fear not, there will soon be some other cock-and-bull story to froth about.
Sounds a bit like BREXIT.
Those trees look awful though, looks like they have bulbous limbs! Can’t they be replace by something that looks good?
I do agree that they look odd when they’ve first been clipped, but they’ll be fine once the spring is here and the new shoots and leaves appear.
