This quiz is about old style stone milestones to be found at the side of the road. They are not the milestones in project management.
All the milestones have a distance to Abingdon, and a distance to another place. So where would you find them?
A. Isley 9, Abingdon 2
B. London LVIII, Abingdon II
C. Oxford 3, Abingdon 3
D. Oxford 1, Abingdon 5
I am no expert and have not attempted to date them. A website called A Short History of Waymarks does help. There is also a Milestone Society, founded in 2001, for milestone enthusiasts. Members’ interests also include tollhouses, turnpike history and canal milestones.
Is C on the old A34 through Bagley Wood?
I thought A and C were football results…
I have often seen these mile markers around and about the UK and have often thought, of all things, there must be a niche interest in them…
What a thoroughly wonderful blog item. Thank you.
Is B at Gozzard’s Ford?
I thought, A might be Drayton, B might be at Culham. C as suggested, probably Bagley Woods, no idea about D.
Would make an interesting cycle ride taking in all 5,but I would need a few pointers.
Well Done!
A Drayton (just beyond Sutton Wick),
B Gozzards Ford (next to the Black Horse)
C is near Boars Hill on Foxcombe Road, the Abingdon side of where the subsidence happened
D is Abingdon Road, Oxford, near the Tesco Express
