1200 houses at Dalton Barracks to be added to the Vale Local Plan 2031

Dalton Barracks
The release of the airfield and Dalton Barracks by the Ministry of Defence has provided a ‘Brown Field’ site to help meet the needs for new homes in the Vale of White Horse District, and Oxford City nearby. Oxford has not met the new housing quota set by central government.

1,200 houses could be built at Dalton barracks. That would increase the size of Shippon 3 or 4 times. Shippon is the closest village to Abingdon. It is separated from Abingdon by the width of the A34, and has army housing and the barracks, with the older village nearby,

including the Prince of Wales pub and St Mary Magdalene church.

The part 2 of the Vale plan also includes 600 houses near Kingston Bagpuize with Southmoor, and smaller housing developments in Marcham and East Hanney. The plan will be ratified in 2018.

Dont forget the 3500 houses proposed for the land between the Europa School and Culham Railway station. OK they have said that “only” 700 can be built before there is a new river crossing to take all the residents to Didcot, Milton Park and Harwell (assuming that is where they want to go) but even 700 more houses on that already over-congested road will be a nightmare.

I have a shepherd’s hut (pre-Cameron!) in my back garden. We could probably fit another four in. No running water, no loos, vehicular access. Shared waste bins. No planning permission required, since they are mobile.

If we take out the lawn and the planting, we could probably fit in six rather than four.

We could build a tower block on the Market Square with ground floor shops – not to be occupied, just to stand empty.

Then we could probably get 400 houses on Albert Park and 500 more on the cricket and croquet club field.

All we need is a little imagination…. Of course, we would need more flowers to keep Daniel happy 😉

Ppjs, if you want a classic example of people living without planning permission, no running water, no toilets, no waste facilities, no power and paying no council tax just look at the people living on narrow boats in Abingdon?

This is all a bit bizarre and I know the legalities of local plans are domplex but…

Secretary of state is announcing a revision to the housing formula that will mean vale needs to build less houses in total

Surely if a new site has come on stream they should also be looking to remove one or more of the sites in the existing plan, rather than just adding more.

Has anyone heard of any sites proposed to be removed from the existing plan,? I understand we need to build more houses and wherever they go will annoy somebody, but I’m quite concerned about the combined impact of the various developments around Abingdon spread across different local plans that dont get considered in the round because of our three tier council system.
