Abingdon Marina Park – Sometimes an Island

Abingdon Marina Park
Abingdon Marina Park can be reached by walking along South Quay. The park has waterside views back across the marina to the houses and long boats of the marina development.
Abingdon Marina Park
The park has a large green area in the centre with trees and a circular walk round what feels like a island. When the bottom of South Quay floods it becomes an island. At other times it has a path accessible by all.

The River Thames is on the other side and a channel connects Marina and Thames.

You will see mostly dog walkers down that way. It is also used for health walks, and is a place where you can find your own space.

P.S Rewrote this piece as it did not look right on re-reading. Apology for the offence to all overs of this park.

On another topic altogether are there still plans to demolish the multi story car park in Abingdon? People should start a campaign for wider parking spaces. It seems fate that when I park my ordinary saloon car in a car park, for instance in the multi story or Tesco, I come back to the car and find that some enormous people carrier or jeep has parked by the side of my car. As I gaze with dismay at the 3″ gap between the oversized vehicle drivers door and my car I wonder how the person got out without denting my or scratching my door. My friend was angry as she had just got a new car and came back to find a dent in the door. Of course she could not prove who has done it. Car parking spaces are too small for today’s outsized vehicles.

The plan is to refurbish not demolish the multi-story car park. When and how remains a closely guarded secret, as is often the case regarding matters of interest to Abingdon townsfolk.

The little park is a nice addition at the present edge of that end of town, in this day and age where more excercise is constantly suggested the addition of a footbridge (we’ll never get a road bridge) across to the other bank would provide a nice circular town walk, foot/cycle access to Culham and easy cycle access east and west from South Abingdon. It would also be good if the hard riverside path south of Abingdon Bridge continued north up to the lock which would create another easy fuss and mud free circular walking and/or running route.
