Broad Face – New Chapter

Broad Face - New Chapter
The scaffolding is down. Work has been going on at the Broad Face before the new people open up. Thanks to Spike A for sending these pictures which show it is looking good.
Broad Face - New Chapter
I hear that it will open as a traditional pub doing meals. We look forward to the new chapter in this well known pub with its long and colourful history.

Met Josh, the new landlord, and he gave us a quick tour of the place. What a fantastic transformation and great to see Kim back behind the bar, a familiar face from many years back when it had its regular customers. He is going to be serving classic English fare served on china plates and linen knapkins in his words. Official open night is 5th Ict.

Hopefully it’ll be a bit more stable this time round. Seems to have changed hands dozens of times in the 4 years I’ve lived here!

Like the little bit of history.

If done by hand, that is superlative signwriting and even correct use of apostrophes.
Perhaps Banksy might drop by one night ? Scope for Trompe l’oeil in that blocked-off upstairs window.

A window tax on property was introduced in 1696 and repealed only in 1851. The tax was based on the number of windows, so, to save money, many were blocked up.
Strangely, faked blocked up windows have been used as a design feature in the estate where I live in Abingdon, yet they were built only 10 years ago!

Here’s a good one, according to Sky news Larry Sanders, brother of American presidential hopeful Bernie is to run as the Green Party candidate for Daves now vacant seat in Witney !

How time flies. When I moved here a tad under ten years ago The Broad Face was the only rival to The Brewery Tap at the ‘top end’ of the Town Centre market. It did really good food and a reasonable range of beers, and was a bustling place.

Story has it that Greene King saw how successful the tenants’ efforts had been in improving the pub’s food offering that they severely ramped-up the rent and the tenant’s took a walk rather than cave in to the brewery’s greed/exploitation. But, then, what do I know?

Since then the pub hasn’t really taken off again, though Dusty would have, undoubtedly, made a go of it had he not seen a greater opportunity.

All the best to the new people running the joint. I hope they’re not tied too tightly to Greene King’s beer offerings, or they’ll have problems.

Capt K – Larry Sanders was the Green party candidate here in the 2015 election – lovely man, although he got off to a bad start by mis-spekking Abingdon on his campaign literature! It was at a radio hustings recorded here in Abingdon that he announced that bernie was standing for US President.

Looks great – I will be checking it out in the next few days. Be positive – this could be a great new addition to the options in town. Good luck to the proprietors

Walked past The Broad Face this afternoon and the place seemed to be pretty much full including the outside seating. Nice to see Abingdon gain another pub after it being closed for so long.

The Broad Face opened its doors last Sunday (25 Sept). It’s being run by the same chap that did up The Plough in Bicester a couple of years ago. Good selection of 8 (count ’em!) real ales on tap, not tied to any particular brewery, as far as I could tell.

Unless that’s an old sign then its clearly still a Greene King pub Nigel. Hopefully they won’t up the rent if the pub is successful. That’s what kills off most of the good GK pubs. They become victims of their own success. With 8 hand pumps that’s requires a lot of custom to maintain that amount, brave move!! Hopefully they will be allowed some decent guest beers as I hear that GK are a bit more relaxed about beers from other breweries in their pubs these days. Good luck to them!!
