The Spider’s Lair

Blooming of Abingdon
I spotted this spider in a new web in Abingdon town centre this evening. Older webs, like old rags, were tangled behind.

But where is this spider’s lair?

It looks well positioned for moths and insects attracted by night lights.

…I think, in the top corner of the second photo, I can just make out a confusing, dark and shady web…is that the Old Gaol deal – is this photo from The Veil headquarters!?

Slightly of topic, but, a couple of threads back Backstreeter featured the mural in the passage by the old stroll in shop, one of the 3 items featured was the Holy Cross and someone asked what happened to it? I’m in Jonkers rare book shop in Henley and came across an old Taunt book on the Thames, he makes reference to the cross and the fact the painting at the end of Long Alley Almshouse is of it, he goes on to say it was destroyed by Wallers Army ??
Any help on that one peeps?

Willam Waller was a roundhead general whose regiment of foot was probably based in Abingdon in the spring/summer of 1644. It was in this period that the cross in Abingdon was destroyed.

Waller had a mixed military career. he was, by all accounts, a skilled and experienced tactician but he lacked the charisma to gain the devotion of his troops. He got more and more disillusioned as time wore on and eventually left the military. he was involved in the negotiations to restore Charles II to the throne, but retired soon after.
