The annual fun in the parks is taking place today in the Abbey Gardens, and on the main stage to start the day was the Abingdon Community Orchestra.
Organised by Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council the event incorporates lots of colourful people.
The Red Cross are there as always to provide trained first aiders.
There was a recent news story about the biggest bouncy castle in the world. It cannot be much bigger than some of the inflatables at the Abbey Meadows today. There were also lots of community groups with stalls in the Car Park.
There are also a bike track, a climbing wall, and army recruitment personnel and vehicles on the Market Place to ensure the town centre is also involved.
Later today there will also be the Music in the Park. They have run out of wrist bands for that.
I think this is a great event….and brilliant to have such a thing in the square (bmx) . However…a straw poll of my friends and family in Abingdon…and the answer seems to be that they weren’t aware this was on….
None the less….a great Abingdon event!
I was in town just after Fun in the Park finished and it was lovely to see so many people/families walking around with smiles on their faces. Areal feel-good moment, well done all.
Re Daniel’s comment, it is back to the age-old question of “how do people get their information”. There were posters around town, it was in the Town Crier, which went to every house in Abingdon 5-6 weeks ago, it has been tweeted and on Facebook, it is on the Town website, which is the main source of information about town events – and it has been on the same weekend every year for the last few years.
The TC – and other people organising events – must find it very frustrating trying to find ways of reaching everyone
Finally, I have just checked the Events Calendar and things to look out for on the next 3 weekends are:
Saturday 11 June 7pm Bun throwing for the Queen’s 90th Birthday
Sunday 12 June – Queen’s Birthday picnic at Lambrick Way
Saturday 18 June – Mayor of Ock Street celebrations – all day
Saturday 25 June – Abingdon Food Festival
All of these are on the town website http://www.abingdon.gov.uk and are plugged via the WhatsOnAbingdon Twitter account – as well as other places.
Thanks Hester. Am not saying it isn’t promoted, just that those I know hadn’t heard.. which isn’t to say it was sent “out there”, just not known to them.
As we’ve discussed…this is a difficult circle to square. However…I still wonder….if I woke up thinking “what shall I do in Abingdon today?” I’d know where to look. If I woke up wondering “what shall I do today..?”…I’m not sure I’d have known.
The answer, I don’t know. Having said that, JackFM has (I think) local events advertised. Does HEART? BBC Oxford? I listen to at least one of those daily…. but hey, that’s just me….
Regardless….it is a great event that can only get even better by yet more publicity….
Meanwhile…when do we get to rant about the short comings of the Leisure Centre/ill thought out lido issue…
Music in the Park was absolutely fantastic! The Army band was amazing, as were the other bands. The atmosphere was great, so friendly, inclusive and welcoming for everyone. Congratulations to the organisers!
