The Stan James betting shop in Abingdon’s High Street appears to have closed. The Stan James online business was taken over by Unibet, who now own the name. I read that the remaining 80 UK betting shops need to be renamed in the near future.
Another local gambling machine shop is also closed until further notice.
The government has increased the tax on gambling machines. It is now at 20% for machines taking more than 20p bets, 25% for machines that allow bets of £5 and over.
No bad thing. Betting shops are like leaches, sucking money out of a community
Absolutely, whilst I feel sorry for any who’ll be losing their jobs, betting shops and slot machine ‘amusement’ arcades a blight on any High Street.
…but TWO shutting down at once…what are the odds…!?
Just on the subject of changed. Tesco has closed its Giraffe restaurant and they are renovating it and changing it back to a Tesco Cafe. I think they found that people want good inexpensive food. If people have two or three children Giraffe would not be able to compete with McDonalds across the way.
Tesco Giraffe was never going to be successful. Most people want a cafe in a supermarket, where they can have a quick coffee and light snack . Someone on the board made a bad decision.
Beales has it just right. Reasonably priced food and drinks and very pleasant staff.
You bet Liz!
Foreign animals coming over here and naming our restaurants, eh Janet? Personally I like the Giraffe restaurant. They do a great vege breakfast.
A sign of the times or what? The previous post re events in one of our churches attracted but one comment, ditto the previous thread re the museum, but the closer of a betting shop along with an amusement arcade, oh and the cafe at tesco was more popular, oh dear !
most people are not churchgoers – it’s understandable.
oh dear Captainkaos2 I must of missed your comments on the aforementioned news items
The Giraffe closure is more to do with Tesco selling their interest in the company than the restaurant. Tesco are selling a number of businesses they bought a stake in all of which turned out to be bad business decisions. The idea of a now separate business using store space at nil rent wouldn’t be desirable for Tesco
