Rowing Machines, Bright Cupola, Commonwealth Flag, and Balloon Arch

Abingdon Rowing Club were out on rowing machines on the Market Place in Abingdon-on-Thames, raising money for Cancer Research. They had a target of 346 km – the length of the River Thames.

The scaffolding has come down from the Cupola above the County Hall Museum revealing a shiny weather vane and bright Cupola – all ready for the Queen’s 90th Birthday Bun Throwing on Saturday 11th June.

The Commonwealth Flag is also flying to commemorate Commonwealth Day on Monday 14 March.

In Bury Street there is a balloon arch in front of the new Superdrug entrance.

Bury Street got a face lift three years ago. The main change, apart from the new facades, was two larger units. The intention was to attract national retailers. Both units have now been filled by national retailers – New Look and Superdrug.

Although they did move from elsewhere in Bury Street.

Both retailers – Superdrug & Newlook – having moved from smaller units within the precinct – so no new “National Retailers” being attracted by these 2 larger, prime spaces! With the possibility of Poundland moving to the old Co-op unit, and the re-vamp of the Charter now in question, what are the chances that those in control will consider perusing (vigorously) a Cinema partner to take the old Woolworth (latterly Poundland) property? It certainly presents itself as the only central property that could house a 3 screen facility. However, I for one am not holding my breath!

Why does everyone want a cinema in Abingdon? Let’s face it, it will be empty most of the time! We have a great Cineworld in Didcot which to be fair isn’t ever full midweek. It takes 15 minutes from Abingdon and after 6pm is free to park.

I would prefer that either Poundland and/or Co-Op become an arcade of various small boutiique style shops, record shop and the like.

Face it, we will never get a Next, Debenhams etc and as a ‘town’ I don’t think we need them. We need interesting shops which bring people (tourists) to Abingdon and offer something different to Oxford, Didcot, Witney etc.

Should “everyone in Abingdon want a Cinema” , then surely this is an opportunity for an operator and possibly the will of the majority! Abingdon is a town with a population of circa 38k and should be able to stand alone – if local government had vision and the gumption of those in Didcot and Witney – but, as a result we stagnate, whilst all around appear to thrive. Abingdon is a wonderful town that has been let down and by-passed in favour of other Oxford satellite locations. It is time that half hearted attempts at re-vitalising Abingdon stopped and a serious plan instigated.
