We owe a great debt to the brave man and women who fought for our country. We could not defend ourselves now as half the country would be fighting against us. (Lets hope Jeremy Corbyn does not get into power.) What with disbanding the army and Trident we would be easy meat for any bullying nation.

PS sorry – should have said that I totally agree with your first statement – and also have respect for all those everywhere who are still fighting for their freedom from oppression.

Who would have thought that nice Mr Hitler would want to attack us Daniel? The world is becoming volatile. Iran is getting nuclear power. Pakistan already has it. Yes Hester. Perhaps we should change to Sharia Law as a large number of our population would like. Mind you I would hate wearing the hid jab. It would be a nightmare trying to do my gardening in the rose bed it would get snagged up on the thorns.

@6. There is no correct spelling for a word which originates from a language which has a non-roman script. At best, a phonetic approximation is made. Thus there is no absolutely correct way of spelling such words transposed from another language.
As for the reference (disparaging or otherwise) to newspapers, we are a country of free speech supposedly and people are entitled to read whatever papers they choose.

Actually No. 8, you have made me feel a bit bad….. I would never normally dream of correcting someone’s spelling, not just for the reason that mine is far from perfect! I was just a bit riled by that particular comment.

Im sure this is a pointless post but there you go.

I think it was a celebration of thanks to those who helped 75 years ago if I’m not mistaken ! Not sure a nuclear weapon is going to help stop a modern terrorist organisation that has no link to a particular state, but hey if it helps you sleep at night best we keep them.

How can Corbyn. Sturgeon and co even contemplate disbanding Britains nuclear capability when the likes of Pakistan and Iran are already armed? Who knows what capabilities Assad in Syria has? Or the other Capian sea countries have? The problem there is what happens with/to th if they fall into terrorists hands? The wests, through NATO has kept us safe for 70 years, can you imagine what Conrad Krushchev would have done during the Cuba crisis if it not for the fact most of his country could have been obliterated at the touch of a button? North Korea, Libya, Iran, the list of potential invaders is enormous !

Back to the thread. I must say that it looked like a fun evening at the British Legion and the car parade gave the right note of respect.
I am absolutely in awe of all of those people who sacrificed so much to defend the freedom of this land. Their bravery should be honoured and it is right that we do not forget them.

Never fear captain…. in a few days Dave’s crossings will be finished, and the Oct Street/Drayton Rd traffic will be a thing of the past. Remember to congratulate him on a decision well made….

(depending upon whether he was right…. we’ll either spit-fire, or fly-past ; to bring it back to the original story….)

Daniel, we may even need the help of 617 squadron, the dam busters ! That’s assuming Corbyn hasn’t disbanded the RAF!
Cassandra, well said, if you look at the war memorial you will see more of my family names than any other, in fact my research suggests the first Abingdonian to fall was my great uncle ? That’s why so pationate about this beautiful town and so so outspoken about the idiots who come her and think they know more or better just coz they talk with a plumb in their mouth ! There I go again !

Well said Cassandra – most people from Britain (abingdonian or otherwise), the Commonwealth and the other allied nations, lost family members in the various wars and we owe those generations a huge debt of gratitude
