Planted, cared for, and watered

Blooms
The blooms that have been planted, cared for, and watered by the Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council outdoor staff have made a fine display this summer.

The newest feature in 2015 are the hanging baskets and raised bed at Roysse’s Court.

Yes the displays are lovely this year. If you want to see more of Abingdon’s blooms Abingdon Horticultural Society is holding it’s Autumn show at the Northcourt Centre on the 5th September.

Yes indeed. Congratualtions to all concerned. The displays are superb and have been properly maintained so they have lasted very well indeed.

I think the red theme on the Drayton Road is spectacular. Full marks to whoever is responsible for producing such a brilliant display each year.

St Helens Wharf is one of Abingdon’s gems, especially when traffic is light. Congratulations to those who keep the blooms looking so elegant.

Ditto all of this but apart from the hanging baskets the precision of planting the actual beds is astonishing, what ever happened to the Britain in Bloom competition? The town council would be a sure winner !

The flowers in the Abbey Garden in their circular bed are to be admired too, an attractive gateway to our riverside meadow.

Britain in Bloom these days is about whole community involvement and not just civic flower displays – though many groups do work closely with their local council. To quote from the RHS website –
Communities of all sizes can take part, from small villages to large cities. Some groups are entirely run by volunteers and some work in partnership with their local council. Every summer participants are assessed for efforts in three key areas:

    Horticultural achievement
    Community participation
    Environmental responsibility

If anyone is seriously interested in starting up a Britain in Bloom group in Abingdon -please get in touch with me!!

All of that said one swallow doesn’t make a summer. I’ve just come back from Lucca, one of Abingdons twin towns, there is a stage erected in the square for the summer season where free music and various stage Shows are held all summer long,by contrast all of inhabitants of the 200 or so caravans & campers on the cricket ground along with the numerous boats moored up have for entertainment is one jumble sale table on the market place !
Why can’t Abingdon put on stuff like the Henley festival or the weekend stalls they have at Stratford? Apart from entertains the locals there’s a whole group of visitors that we’re failing to connect with !

Oh Captain K – how good to see that you have come round to see that some of the things the TC and ChAP were doing over recent years were a good idea after all – your previous incarnation must be turning in his grave! With their support, events like the Cycling Festival, ATOM Festival, Chilli Festival, Yeah Baby and Splash of Pink became established as regular events. ChAP had planned for more and following their demise, others are looking at ways to build on the festival idea – I am sure that they would welcome help.

In the meantime, August has always been a quiet month – even TC staff and voluntary groups need holidays – but coming up we have the Chilli Festival next weekend and Dragon Boat Day and Heritage Open Days in September..

Hester surely you’re not suggesting that Chap’s takes credit for Yeah Baby? A charitable event brought about by a families tragedy, The cycling festival I believe manifested itself from James of Outdoor Traders brainchild, Splash of Pink I understand to be a well established charity too, trying to take credit for other people’s ideas and efforts is pretty poor ! And if Chaps was really that good don’t you think the three councils that funded it to the tune of almost £200k would have continued their support instead of pulling the plug! To say historically August is a quite month is typical of the no vision brigades, events can still be organised by those who are paid to do so, even if they’re away from their post, it’s called planning ahead!
As for my previous incarnation, well I use this one because someone ( IP address 94-13-38-201. Sky account,)used my name and e mail address to post derogatory stuff on here (and yes we all
    Know who that is)
Hester, jump in your car and take ride to Stratford or Henley and see what’s going on there and then ask yourself why Abingdon does not follow suit ?

Try again….Please don’t misquote me, Capt K – I said that ChAP and the TC supported those events – not that they claimed credit for them. I wouldn’t dream of taking anything away from those wonderful volunteers who get out and do stuff for the town.

I know that TC staff worked flat out to organise Fun in the Park and Music in the Park, for many months in advance, but the same people have other jobs to do the rest of the year. I too would love to see more festivals, but If we want the TC to organise them I think we would have to fund an increase in TC staff – and therefore rates. It needs a more sophisticated approach involving co-operation, sponsorship etc as has been done by the ATOM team, not just wishing that “they” can magically do it for free.
prospective councillors know at election time.
