The Christmas Lights were turned on at 5:30 on Saturday. The big candles above the Market Place have been repaired after their first few years or use, and are looking as strong as ever in 2014.
Thanks to Peter for sending an alternative view of the fireworks that followed the lights being switched on.
The most original new light in 2014 is near the war memorial – a simple poppy.
The displays along High Street look best if you can sweep through town in a car.
Sami’s Kebab Trailer must enjoy being at the centre of this Picadilly Circus of lights. The golden lights down Bury Street, behind, got turned on a week before the rest.
I read in the Herald that about £15K was spent on new lights and light repairs by Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council round the town centre. The museum lights look as striking as ever, whether viewed outside or in.
I heard only recently, on tv, that the ‘leaf” on a poppy should point to 11 O’clock, I see this one points to 1. (or is it viewable from both sides? In which case it would be at 11 from the other side. I have not seen it yet other than this picture). Has anyone else heard of this?
The lights are wonderful – well done all.
I think the position of the poppy leaf is about how it is worn as a buttonhole. This is usually on the left side of the garment, and then the poppy leaf accentuates the upward and outward movement of a jacket lapel. Whether this is a matter of “should” is probably at least as much an issue of how it looks as anything else. And (as Julian remarks) in the case of the illuminated poppy in town it depends on where you stand…
Keep the fashion police out of this.
“There are also many people who say that the leaf should point to 11 o’clock. The Royal British Legion told Newsbeat: “There is no right or wrong way to wear a poppy. It is a matter of personal choice whether an individual chooses to wear a poppy and also how they choose to wear it. The best way to wear a poppy is to wear it with pride.”
What a lovely sight
The poppy leaf should be at the 11 o clock postion, hence 11th hour , 11th day, 11th month also saw this display today & the poppy itself is upside down, waste of money , just saying
