Nags Head – 2 years on

Nags Head - 2 years on
Two years ago the Nags Head re-opened. It had been a failing pub and was closed for quite some time. During the first winter the pub was refurbished very tastefully and the first year was a success.

During the second winter decking was added to improve the island, and the second year has gone well.

More improvements are underway to landscape the near end of the island.

The pub now has it’s own beer, and as well being in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for the second year running, has retained the title of Town & Country Pub of the Year.

To celebrate there will be a Beer Festival this weekend from 24th to the 26th October with 28 beers and 10 ciders.

I believe Dusty has shown he’s a smart risk-taker with a good eye for what his potential customers are looking for … these are skills in short supply almost anywhere you care to mention.

The Nags is now an absolute asset to the town, whereas, a short while ago, it had been a sad monument to the decline of the town centre. Along with the development of The Crown and Thistle, The Kings Head and Bell and the continued excellence of The Tap the town centre is now on the way to becoming a social destination in this part of Oxfordshire.

I think this social revival/reinvention is the hope for the town centre rather than retail as the councils seem determined to give retail away to out-ot-town shopping eg. easing of Fairacres covenants.

Of course, Alastair et al recently illustrated that it’s possible to put a brilliant show on in the Market Place.

This is all good and a proper commercial cinema would really help this trend.

Sitting in the riverside garden of the Nag’s Head with whitebait and a glass of wine on a sunny weekend while watching the boats go by was a most enjoyable treat; but the place was marred by the utterly disgraceful gents loo!

The thing that seriously mars what is otherwise a fabulous venue is the way the owner exploits his staff, refusing to pay more than the minimum wage despite skill and experience, and swears at them. This leads to high staff turnover and poor service.

Dusty continues to improve the pub month by month which is more than Greedy King would have done if taken over. Keep it up.

had a couple of nice sunday early evenings there in the garden listening to the music – I bet the nearby old gaol new flats have been a boon for them.
