I read in the Herald and then saw on the BBC local website that the Abingdon Country Market is to close after 65 years.
The 90 minute Country Market in the Roysse Room on a Friday Morning used to bring in the crowds, but not so much any longer.
In recent years The Country Market stall at the Farmers Market has been far more popular. So we will see next Friday at the Farmers Market whether they are still there.
I hope so, and they are just moving with the times.
I have lived in Abingdon for a number of years and was not even aware this market existed so whilst I try my best to use local services, it is very hard when you don’t even know they are there!
Having pitches on the Farmers market seems to be far more sensible given this is actually advertised and is visible in the town when it is on.
never heard of it – the idea of a market that runs for just 90 minutes when most decent folk are at work is a little bizarre.
A quick straw poll following this item on the BBC news showed that very few even knew it existed! Perhaps they should run it on a Monday when the actual market is in too to draw in people, or just advertise it better before they close shop.
Again, had no idea it was there, maybe a bit of advertising would of helped them, that A-Board seems to be on the lawn in-front of the guild hall, you get very little foot fall there.
