Final Day at Sweet Chocolate

Sweet Chocolate
Sweet Chocolate opened in Stert Street during September 2009 and closed down today. They thank all their customers for the last 5 years and may have an online presence some time in the future.

They provided some good gifts over Christmas and for special occasions – particularly the jars full of assorted sweets. Everything was half price today. They say there just was not enough footfall to make a shop like theirs work at other times.

Simon’s Emporium (pictured above) , down East St Helen Street, are expanding their range of sweets to fill the gap in the market now Sweet Chocolate have gone.

It is a shame – when my daughter was in town with me, we always popped in to buy a bag of something, but unfortunately, because by necessity they were expensive compared to a normal sweet shop, I couldn’t see them last as a specialist sweetshop, without adding a boutique chocolatier side or something. Best wishes.

Annabel, we lasted 5 years and I have shut the business by choice as I can get out of the lease this month, what do you call a normal sweet shop ? We used to have a chocolate counter but had more interest in sweets so it didn’t cover costs, as I have said many times on this blog, the traffic, parking and lack of variety of shops in Abingdon are its down fall and this won’t change in the next 3 years. Bottom line this was a business to make profit, not for me to float it from my career, it’s a shame that the regulars won’t be able to pick up their specialist sweets anymore and the staff have lost their jobs.

Others are moving from Abingdon, ‘

Heelas are moving to Bayworth. They are ‘hidden’ away
near to the roundabout Radley Road/Oxford Road/Vineyard.

Behind hairdressers on left (as you enter Vineyard).

Had a full breakfast in Crumbs this weekend, before stopping off to drop some electrical items for recycling in the pink recycling bin, East-west St Helens Street carpark, so many empty shops still. Found someone had flytipped a Television set next to it. (Bin seemed very empty-so I wonder how much longer it will be there?).

I’m sorry to see Sweet Chocolate go, though I fully understand the reasons.

I’ve often popped in with my kids to buy them treats so we’ll miss it.

Thanks for giving it a go and good luck for the future.
