New Christmas Lights in Bury Street looking very good

The new Christmas lights in Bury Street were already on this evening, and looking very good. It could have been a test run, or they could be on from now until twelfth night.

All the rest of the street lights will be turned on as part of the Christmas Extravaganza on Saturday 30th December – followed by fireworks. I have no idea who is turning on the lights this year but I hope it will be Cinderella .

The Extravaganza will start with the traditional parade at 11.45am. There will be the usual mix of stalls and entertainment throughout the afternoon. Reindeer and baby animals will be in the Roysse Gardens. Cinderella’s ballgown will be on display at the Guildhall.

Its beyond a joke, I bet the council thought, “yes! we will set some budget aside for some nice lights to decorate Bury Street just in time for Christmas.” Clearly, in the hope that there would actually be some shops there to spend some money in. Dear oh dear.

I thought the lights looked very good last night. I assume they were paid for by the shopping centre management. If they were provided by the council they would not be switched on until the Extravaganza. I look forward to seeing everyone shopping in Bury Street, the Local Excellance Market and the rest of the town centre tomorrow.

I agree, looks fantastic (slight shame they didn’t wait for the rest of the lights 😉 Bring on the Extravaganza!

I’m making a point of doing as much Christmas shopping in Abingdon as I can this year. We have such a beautiful town.

I too agree that it would have been better if they (I guess they = Scottish Widows or their agents) had waited until the turn-on of the rest of Abingdon’s lights. Looking at the photo it seems that the lights are yellow which is a bit of a shame, as I recall that the Town’s lights are predominately white (with coloured highlights) – though, we will all know in 8 days time…… I wonder if the precinct operators and the Town Council have actually talked to each other – a bit of co-ordination and joined-up-thinking would do wonders !!I An opportunity for the Town Council to be pro-active…..

The Bury Street lights are nothing to do with the Town Council. I am told that the management were approached, but chose not to get involved with the Town’s plans for Christmas lights.
The rest of the town lights are provided by the Town Council, and the Extravaganza – including parade and turning on the lights – is organised by the Chamber of Commerce.

A big improvement . They really brighten up Bury Street ! – We have had a lot of really positive comments by the public .

I understand they are going to be turned off on 30th Nov and then ‘officially’ turned on .
