Abingdon Artists – Spring Exhibition

Spring Exhibition
Abingdon Artists have their Spring Exhibition in St Nicolas Church, Abingdon, from 3-8 April. It will be open every day from 10 to 4.30 with free entry.

There are pictures for sale, and cards, and there is the usual exhibition raffle with a chance to win an original watercolour.

Abingdon Artists welcome new members. They have talks, and an indoor group on Tuesdays where people brings their own projects to work on – advice is available, and an outdoor sketching group somewhere in town on Friday.

Reflections – A quilting Exhibition in the Abingdon Museum

Abingdon quilters return to the museum today for a second exhibition that runs until 26th March 2017. Thanks to Judy Harris for the information.

The highlight of the show is a huge piece on the Abingdon Workhouse whose hexagonal plan in the museum sparked the first idea, hexagon templates being the first step into quilting for many people. We started with the actual workhouse building then paused. This was an organic project which slowly grew and developed with input from a very large team, and also literally grew in size when the museum suggested hanging it in the central window of the gallery!
Quilts
On the other side of the gallery are smaller pieces inspired by the ancient people, customs and buildings of Abingdon, as well as an MG piece, and a piece protesting the destruction of the Green Belt round Abingdon. The windows are adorned with textile buns made by children in a museum workshop and at OLA Junior School.

The 3rd Abingdon Food Festival was held at Rye Farm Meadow this year.

The event was organised by Abingdon Rotary Vesper. Alan Rickman (pictured here) organised their publicity, and managed to get a lot a people to come along even though the weather was wet at times.

One of the star turns was a shiny lorry full of the latest in kitchen equipment, with some demos. This was organised and sponsored by Dream Doors (the Stert Street Kitchen specialist),

Then there were rows of gazebos where you could buy takeaway food. We enjoyed the freshly cooked samosas, and Pujabi cuisine from Sufi Spice. They let us stand in the back of their gazebo to shelter from the rain.

Other tents were selling food to take home, or concepts such as ‘how to live life on the veg’.

The Abingdon Food Festival is a great way to try new food and get new ideas about food.

Stories of African Peacemakers

African Peacemakers
At St Nicolas Church this week there is an exhibition of African Peacemakers. It comprises large photographic portraits, and a quote, and biography of the person.

The photographer says “My suggestion is that for you to look at the faces for a considerable amount of time. I believe if you do so for long enough you should see parts of yourself looking back at you.”

One of the peace makers is quoted as saying
‘My mother was very disappointed in me
seeing me doing this reintegration.
She said “What are you doing?
These are the people who tortured you.
These are the people who raped your sister.
These are the people who burnt your house.
And you know them.
What are you doing?
You are a disgrace.”

I found myself not knowing what to do
whether to continue with my conviction to build peace
or to do what my mother said.

Thank God I did what my conviction asked me to do.’

The exhibition is put on by the Quakers.
