Twinkling Lights outside the Town Centre

Outside the town centre, the displays of festive lights round the estates and roads of Abingdon looks as impressive as ever. Probably more so than previous years.

The Abingdon Court Care Home has a very fine display
Saxton Road
I could have chosen one of about a dozen houses to feature from Saxton Road – as usual.
Ladygrove
The same applies to the Ladygrove Estate where there are lots of houses outlined with twinkling displays.

The Abingdon Christmas Tree is sponsored by The Monday Market Traders …

This year, like last year, The Abingdon Christmas Tree is sponsored by The Monday Market Traders.

They will be back tomorrow with lots more Christmas Trees …

and other festive favorites like mistletoe and holly.

All the other smaller markets, that have sprung up in recent years, are advertised with banners and road side signs but locals know Monday is Market Day in Abingdon from 8.30am to 3.30pm. Stalls include fresh fruit and vegetables, outdoor plants, bags and suitcases, clothing, greeting cards, picture frames, mirrors, bread, dairy and meat products, eggs, pickles and jams, pet supplies, carpets, vacuum cleaner bags, pillows and cushions, watch straps and batteries, jewelery, books, olives and nuts, BLACK BAGS and elsewhere more BLACK BAGS …

Christmas Began on 18th October in Abingdon

The first Christmas Lights were being put up in Abingdon on 18th October. The job is done by a specialist contractor with a lot of towns to cover and so they spread the load to keep their workforce fully employed.

This year Stert Street has some new red and silver Christmas trees. One of them is above Oxfam.

Inside Oxfam Christmas is also well underway.

Schools went back today

Schools went back today. The contractors were taking down the Christmas Lights in the Market Place this evening.
Curtain of Light
One festive light display remains across the river. I went down the slipway at St Helen’s Wharf to try to get a low angle shot but found thick mud slurping round my shoes – left behind by the floods. I hope the curtain of rippling light will stay for a while yet.

Half term week starts February 9th.
