JD Wetherspoon have been at work fitting out the Old Post Office in Abingdon High Street to become a pub. Workmen have been in there for a while, but the boards round the front do make it more obvious.

The Abingdon Mummers Play – Explained
Abingdon Mummers performed the local version of the traditional Mummers Play this evening.
The actors came clothed in costumes covered with strips of newspaper.

Father Christmas entered first into the pub to announce the other players. Next through the pub door came a proud King George who is challenged and then slain by Bold Slasher.

The Doctor is then called and through some magic and an injection up the backside manages to resuscitate King George.
Another sword fight ensues and this time Slasher is slain.

Next on the scene is the red cheeked Mrs. Finney who uses an flashing electronic umbrella, up the posterior, to resuscitate Bold Slasher.

Finally, the mummers danced around and wished us a Merry Christmas in traditional style with “We wish you a Merry Christmas”.
Father Christmas then came round with his collection box. Money raised goes to the Breakaway Club – a worthy cause who provide transport for people in Abingdon who otherwise might not get out.
Nags Head official re-opening cannot be far off

A few weeks on from the first report I see that the outside of the Nags Head pub has been renovated and redecorated.

The gold letters are secured back in position.
It was a good move to open The Nag’s Head riverside island – The Bridge – ahead of time with September being such a good month weatherwise.

The beer pumps look ready so the official re-opening cannot be far off.
Nags Head Island Re-opened this weekend

Work continues on the Nags Head pub building, but …

this weekend the island opened up for the first time with a cafe, bar, and grill. The covers were useful as there was a light rain when I got there.

I met Katy and her dad who kindly posed for me holding a pint of Abingdon Bridge,

brewed by Loose Cannon, based in Abingdon.
The Loose Cannon Beer twitter feed said as much last week … “Just had a very exciting meeting with new landlord of The Nags Head on Abingdon Bridge. You will soon be able to drink Bridge on the Bridge!”
