A Visit to Crossroad Grocery in Coxeters Yard, Abingdon

Crossroad Grocery in Coxeters Yard, Abingdon, is now open seven days a week, right next door to the new fruit juice bar called Juice Corner. The grocery officially opened its doors on March 15, 2025, taking over the space once occupied by Seeneys Pet Supplies. I’m a bit late to the party with my visit, and this blog post.

The store’s got an impressive display of fresh fruit and veg. The shelves are packed with a range of goods and there is fresh bread and a meat counter.

Crossroad Grocery is run by Plamena and Biser, who also run Juice Corner. Some of their supplies come from Millets Farm.

If you’re in Abingdon, it’s worth visiting Coxeters Yard to check them out. Good luck to them.

After three decades of service, Tyre Sales Abingdon, the local independent tyre specialist located behind the Esso Garage on Marcham Road, has closed its doors. The company will continue operations through its sister outlet, Sutton Courtenay Tyres, located just 10 minutes away.

Kwik Fit, a leading supplier of tyres in the UK, is all set to open a new branch at the former Tyre Sales Abingdon premises.

Awaiting a Future

This conspicuous black-and-white timber-framed building in Stert Street has a symmetrical gabled roof and a Tudor appearance. The shopfront with large glass windows has an abandoned look. The building once housed the much loved Prices Stationers which closed in December 2021. The freehold was sold in August 2023, but no changes have been visible since and the shop remains empty. Hopefully something will happen soon to give it a new purpose.

Shop Window Screens in Bury Street

Shop window screens, like these on Bury Street in Abingdon, are becoming more common as businesses look for ways to catch people’s attention.

Shops have used screens for decades. Back in the 1970s, in Bury Street, the Cathode Ray Tube TVs in Radio Rentals and Wigfalls Television would sometimes show live TV. In the 2000s, plasma and LCD screens made digital displays more practical, and by the 2010s, LED technology bought in bigger, brighter, and more flexible screens.

In Bury Street, Newbury Building Society and Oxford Vapours both use screens to promote their services.

Oxford Vapours are not only standing up against unlicensed vape traders, and promoting their own products, they also show their charity of the year: My Life My Choice – an award-winning charity run by and for people with learning disabilities in Oxfordshire.
