Abingdon Honours Local Hero and Gears Up for Poppy Appeal

This photo is a reminder of June and the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. There was the unveiling of the Abingdon Royal British Legion’s bar, named after 20-year-old Abingdon airman Ray “Bunny” Belcher, one of the first casualties of D-Day. Club members, in vintage dress, hosted a cream tea party for veterans and raised £500 for the Poppy Appeal through badge sales and donations. Pictured are veteran paratrooper and poppy collector Alan Calver, and club member Lou Hayden (photo by Geoff Smith).

Now, Clare Oldfield, organiser of the Abingdon Poppy Appeal, sets her sights on the October 24th Poppy Appeal launch. She is looking for passionate volunteers to join the team, raising vital funds to support the Armed Forces community.

Clare also mentions that the RBL bar is not just for ex military people. It is open seven days a week and welcomes everyone. Enjoy activities like darts, pool, snooker, Aunt Sally, crib, and music nights.

I arrived back in Abingdon to see Clockwork Dragon won the cup for local charity Against Breast Cancer’s shop window competition.

Fabulous Flowers still have some pink flowers in front of the shop.

Masons on Bath Street have pink dresses.

From Pink Rainbows to Poochy Bags: Abingdon Window Displays

Hodsons were the first window to put up a Splash of pink display that I noticed. Abingdon based charity Against Breast Cancer will have a fun day on the Market Place on Saturday 20th of July and part of that is a best dressed window display.

Two days ahead of the event there are several displays. Willow’s Shake Shop includes a pink rainbow.

The Finishing Touch have pink handbags and umbrellas.

Masons in Stert Street have pink balls of wool filling large ice cream cones.

Masons in Bath Street had a fluffy pink dress made of tulle. The Dog’s Spot had a pink bag of Noochy Poochy and a pelican.

They all used Against Breast Cancer banners or balloons. Other shops will probably turn pink overnight.

Supporting Sobell House: The OxTrail Charity Art Event

The OxTrail can be followed this summer in Oxfordshire. Large and miniature ox sculptures, painted by artists, schools, and community groups, are scattered around the county. See oxtrail2024

Abingdon Library has two miniature oxen.

Abi, a talented Year 8 student from Our Lady’s Abingdon School, designed an ox in her school house colours, featuring the Oxford skyline.

Radley College was inspired by the Matthew Arnold’s poem that included the phrase, “That Sweet City with her dreaming spires”.

The OxTrail is a fundraiser for Sobell House Hospice, which provides end-of-life care and support to patients and their families.
