Rain of last 24 hours

Regarding the heavy rain last night Peter S emailed me to say: a moat has formed at the castle mound off the Motte, there is a raging torrent under the footbridge over the Stert at Boxhill, and the underpass to town from Bath street is flooded. He didn’t send pictures though so you will have to imagine some of that.
Rain of last 24 hours
Last weekend we got caught in quite a rain shower walking back from Sunningwell to Abingdon. Clouds looked dramatic beforehand.

The rain hit us as we crossed over the A34.

Northbound, towards Oxford a rainbow coloured the sky.

Southbound, all the colour had seaped out of the land – as my camera saw it.

Before doing this blog I did pop out to check the underpass. Still flooded – so no need to imagine that one.

Saturday Only

It has been raining most of Sunday as the weather forecast predicted.
Motocross at Culham Park
For three or four weeks now, an event at Culham Park (over the River Thames from Abingdon) has been advertised around Abingdon on roadside signs.

The event combined Motocross with a family amusement event.

As the event neared, the weather forecast looked good for Saturday but bad for Sunday.

And so  “Saturday Only”  appeared on signs. The main events were switched to Saturday as the organisers did not want to fall victim to the weather. There was still Motocross on the rainy Sunday and could be seen from across the river.

As it happens they had a glorious Saturday at the Motocross and Kids Zone.

Sunday morning started overcast and then the rain set in and has continued until now. The forecasters and organisers got it right.

Taking advantage of the heat wave

Harvest Time
Abingdon Marina houses can be seen reflected in this picture across the gravel pit lake. Electricity power lines cross this lake, and so there are warnings not to fish near power lines.
Harvest Time
Beside that lake, there will be blackberries soon.

A combine harvester was at work on the far bank of the River Thames, in Cumnor Parish, taking advantage of the heat wave.
