I was thinking it would be too overcast to see the eclipse. But soon after 9am a bright crescent sun could be seen through the clouds.

Other people, like me, took a break from work to enjoy what we have not seen in Abingdon since 1999.

At the Abbey Meadows a crowd had gathered.

The Abingdon Astonomical Society were there with telescopes and charts as part of the ATOM Science Festival.

It grew cooler and darker as the moon moved in front of the sun. Most of the time the eclipse could be seen through clouds – ideal viewing for those of us who were not properly prepared;

but then there were moments when the clouds opened and the special glasses became essential.

Thanks to Peter from Abingdon Camera Club for sending me a final, extra clear, image.

A Spring-like Day

Today was the most spring-like day of the year so far. The Abbey Meadow’s play area attracted many young families, and the Ice Cream van was doing a good trade. Over the river the Abingdon Parkrun had the usual good turn out.

Ruby’s Vintage Fair was in the Guildhall. They have one more visit on June 6th, and then are looking for a new venue on September 12th, when the Guildhall will be closed for the well publicised upgrade.

The Close Care Home, from nearby Burcot, were raising money on the Market Place for Comic Relief (Friday 13th March) with a tennis ball operated ducking stool. Hit the target and a young lady got ducked.

And The Broad Face re-opened…
Another Snowy Start. Schools were Open

The Oxfordshire County Council’s web site did not show any schools closed because of snow today. Pictured is Carswell School.

Larkmead’s school web site said:
Snow – Larkmead School is open as usual.
It also said “OFSTED Inspection – We have been informed that Larkmead School is to receive an OFSTED inspection on Tuesday 3rd February and Wednesday 4th February.”

Outside the Unicorn School a banner says ‘Ofsted 2012: OUTSTANDING in all areas‘. That’s the way to do it!

Abingdon must have more salt bins per head of population than your average town, but there were still some slippery places on roads and pavements.

I saw one boy come off his bike near this spot. He limped a few paces before getting back on the bike and setting off again.
Oooh, it snowed again!

“Oooh, it snowed!” was my first thought on getting up this morning. I quickly filled up with porridge and set out, unshaven, with my camera.

On Abingdon Market Place, stall holders were setting up the quarterly Local Excellence Market. Next one is May, then August.

The big news is that the Abingdon Country Market are making their first appearance at the Local Excellence Market – as featured in last week’s Abingdon Herald.

I also spoke to the man from the watercress stall. I think he said he was from Alresford, near Winchester. Watercress beds need spectacularly clean flowing water, and they use chalk-filtered water from bore holes. I gather there used to also be watercress produced at Ewelme, near Wallingford, but I don’t believe that is harvested anymore.
After the snow came rain, and it brightened up during the morning, and the snow melted.
I hope it keeps nice for The Wassail, from 2:30 to 4:30, at South Abingdon Children Centre.
