Outdoor Pool opened today for six weeks

The Abbey Meadow Outdoor Pool opened today for six weeks. The pool normally opens in May but due to the increased cost of heating the pool (*) the council took the decision to reduce the season to what should be the most popular time, the summer holidays.

The timetable of hours can be seen at https://www.better.org.uk/leisure-centre/vale-of-white-horse/abbey-meadows-outdoor-pool/timetable.

Prices are up on last year but annual inflation generally is running at over 9%.

Adult is £5.35 (£4.90 in 2021)
Child is £3.30 (£3.10 in 2021)
1 Adult and 1 or 2 Under 3’s is £5.35

* A VWHDC press release said heating costs for the pool were expected to be around £107,000, compared to £47,000 in previous seasons. Presumably that is for a full season.

Refuse plastic, jumble sale, and England’s women

There was a stall on Abingdon Market Place this morning. Abingdon Carbon Cutters have the slogan ‘Refuse, Reduce, Refill and Re-use.”

They want to encourage people to refuse and reduce new plastic, and where that is impossible, re-use many times, and finally recycle.

For activities on the stall, Busby’s beeswax with cloth was being made into an alternative wrapping. There was also a quiz to take away and find out what Abingdon businesses are doing to reduce plastic.

Also, in town, The Salvation Army had an all-day jumble sale with bric-a-brac and clothes.

The England Flag is flying over the County Hall museum during the Women’s EURO 2022 football tournament. The England women’s team started well, winning all three group matches scoring 14 goals with 0 against.

From the County Hall museum roof, there is no sign of the Abingdon Bridge repairs.

The view of Didcot Power Station shows three chimneys.

Cricket Friendship

Ian met this fine Dutch chap at the cricket in Amsterdam when Nederlands played England earlier this month.

Ian was amazed to see Abingdon on his shirt!

His team, The Ajax Sportsman Combinatie, usually known as ASC, is a Dutch football and cricket club, … Ajax was established on 1st June 1892, and played its first match in 1895.

They have apparently been playing friendlies against Abingdon for sixty-three years.

If anybody knows more, then please comment. Ian thinks SC Ajax will be playing Abingdon at the end of July.

If anybody asks, ‘Wat is cricket?’, here is a video to explain …

Croquet in Abingdon

You might think that not a lot happens on the cricket ground on Hales Meadow during the winter months. You might be right.

But I did get an email from the Thames Valley Croquet Club saying they have been meeting in Abingdon for almost 20 years, and are open for play and looking for new members to join the Club. (picture of croquet from this blog in 2007)

They play at the Cricket Club on Hales Meadow. I saw somebody preparing the green  this afternoon. For more details contact try thamesvalleycroquetclub.co.uk.
