There were the first chance, for me at least, to see the plans for the proposed “Forest School” area which carbon cutters are helping to design and implement in the area of school grounds surrounded by fences. The next stage is to dig out the rather rocky ground to plant a hedge. Funds are needed to make this happen.

The area behind this stall is already underway and used as an area for children to explore, move logs about, and find wildlife.

The recent work was funded by WREN –Waste Recycling Environmental – to the sum of  £21,000. The Vale of White Horse District Council gave £2,607 and Abingdon Town Council gave £1,000.  The rest of the money was raised by the Community Centre. Previously WREN grants have helped refurbish the men’s loos (2008) and the kitchen (2006).

Preston Road Community Centre is the local community centre for 11,000 inhabitants of Abingdon – one third of the town.

Hay Raking in Barton Fields

Hay Raking in Barton Fields
The volunteers who look after Barton Fields have a massive task at the moment, raking up hay from the wildflower meadow and other areas. Extra volunteers would be very welcome because of the extra volume of hay this year.

Tools and refreshments are provided, including filled rolls for lunch provided you let them know you are coming. They will be meeting at 9:30 am at the Barton Lane entrance opposite Sophos, on Thursday 6th & Friday 7th Sept.

Contact David Guyoncourt on 01235 529151 or email david.guyoncourt@ntlworld.com to book your packed lunch.

Peace Vigil

Peace Vigil
On Monday a dozen members of Abingdon Peace Group gathered at the War Memorial in Abingdon to mark the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in Japan on August 6th 1945.

This vigil has been held in Abingdon every August for the last thirty years, and reminds us of the tens of thousands of people who died immediately, and the many more who died subsequently of the after-effects of radiation, both in Hiroshima and in Nagasaki which was bombed 3 days later on August 9th 1945.
