Free Food and Drink Showcase and a very well known celebrity

Today’s event on the Market Place – organised by Abingdon-On-Thames Chamber of Commerce – was a repeat of a very popular one from last last year – which I missed then but made sure to get to this time round because there was lots of  free food on offer.

That included …
Food and Drink Showcase
… Tapas from the Lounge Cafe on Bath Street. They are still doing Tapas on Friday and Saturday evenings throughout the colder months.
Food and Drink Showcase
… Dough balls and wine from Pizza Express.
Food and Drink Showcase
… Curry from Tiffins on Bath Street …
Food and Drink Showcase
… and Burgers and Chilli Con Carne from Skillets at the Crown and Thistle.
Food and Drink Showcase
There will also be a special act appearing at the Crown and Thistle on New Year’s Eve – doing some very well known songs.

The People’s Bible at Abingdon Market

Thanks to Revd. David from Abingdon Baptist Church for this Report …
The People's Bible
This year sees the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. That publication put the Bible into the hands of ordinary people, and the Bible Society have been on a national tour to promote the anniversary and to encourage people to re-engage with the Bible.

Called “the People’s Bible”, tens of thousands of people around the country have been copying out a couple of verses of the Bible. Using digital technology their words and their handwriting are uploaded to the internet to produce a unique, handwritten Bible.
The People's Bible
The tour ends on 16th November when a copy of the People’s Bible, created by people around the country, will be presented to the queen.

Normally the tour is going to big cities, but the Church in Abingdon was able to bring the People’s Bible to Abingdon on Market Day, 31st October.

During the day 88 passers-by of all ages wrote out 176 verses from the bible. For most of the day there was a queue at the stall. You can view their contributions and those of thousands of others including celebrities like Jeremy Vine, Aled Jones and Prince Charles, by visiting www.thepeoplesbible.org.

Local Excellence Market

It was an excellent day for the Local Excellence Market. The town crier was out and about letting people know what else was going on: one more day of the craft fair, and Scout fireworks on November 5th behind Long Furlong Community Centre ( Gates Open 6:30pm. Park at Tilsley Park.)

The Carbon Cutters had a clever device to see how hot things are. As you can see Helen, who sent me the picture of the fallow deer recently, is cool where she is insulated but hot where she is not.

Here they are discussing my thermal image. There is also a picture of Harry’s Thermal image on the Harry dog blog.

Lots of good stalls as always. There were cakes from Jane’s Kitchen…

Jill Carver had two suppliers showing their wares. Jill is seen here holding a picture of the Moroccan Argan Tree. The Olive Oil and Argan Oil, in the picture, come from Morocco. The Argan oil is very good but takes a lot of extracting from unyielding nuts and so is not cheap.

There were also a couple of vegetable stalls, an apple stall, meat stall, craft stalls, and local beers, which if the town council have their way we will be able to drink on the Market Place on special occasions (front page story in the Abingdon Herald last week).

Lots of people were out in town enjoying the occasional sunshine and the local excellence market.

The carrots and other produce on this stall were picked yesterday.

Duncan Brown, ex Mayor, bought some beetroot.

There were samples of very tasty Double Gloucester, and Blue Veined Cheddar, from Glastonbury.

Jill Carver, from Added Ingredients, had some very fine Olive Oil for people to try.

The carbon cutters had a bike that drove a food mixer making strawberry smoothies – just visible behind the Town Crier on the bike.

The local excellence market was on from 9:00 – 14:00 today.
