People Power in Abingdon

Abingdon Local Excellence Market
The Abingdon Local Excellence Market was This Saturday. They had a lot of well placed signs all around town letting people know.
Abingdon Local Excellence Market
Abingdon town centre was busy this morning, and the Market was doing well. It had 26 stalls.
38 Degrees
Also active at the Market were local people from an internet ‘people power’ movement called 38 Degrees. 38 Degrees is the angle at which an avalanche happens.

They were trying to make people aware of TTIP – The Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership. It’s a trade agreement between Europe and America which they fear could put the profits of big businesses ahead of environment, healthcare, and the UK minimum wage.

Apprenticeships and Farmers Market

apprenticeships
In the Community Shop (on the corner opposite Poundland) today and tomorrow (Sat 16th Aug) there is the chance for students who have just received their A Level and As Level results (great Abingdon successes here) to investigate apprenticeship as an alternative to university – or anybody else who is interested.

The Farmers Market was also in town today, and Tommy the Tractor was driving down Bury Street to let younger consumers know.

The Country Market are still going strong at the Farmers Market, and very popular, even though they had to give up the Market at the Roysse Room.

I remember buying my first orange Nasio brick to help fund one of the Nasio Day Care Centres in about 2008, and got another brick today. The 2014 bricks are bigger and more squashy.

The Nasio charity began when an elderly lady called Irene found an abandoned baby and cared for it. The works has grown from there, and the trust run two day care centres, and also offer young people from Oxfordshire the chance to get involved with activities and fundraising, culminating in volunteering for one of the projects in Kenya.

The Land Rover on the Market Place is due to be shipped to Mombasa in October , and will be used to help transport sick children to the nearest hospital and help their work in other ways.

On The Market Place Today

Market Place
The annual Youth Festival of Music did not happen today. In previous years the young people have performed during torrential downpours, and today was such a lovely sunny day.
Market Place
The town crier had come out expecting to announce the music starting at 11, but as there was no stage and no performers, he gave a cry instead for the archaeologist in the County Hall Museum.
Market Place
She had over twenty visitors during the day. Discoveries came mostly from Abingdon, but there were also visitors from Frilford, and Clifton Hampden. Their finds were mostly Roman and Medieval coins and pots. The two Roman Coins shown above are from the late third century.

Also of interest was a tandem for sale near the Market Place.
