The Abingdon Carbon Cutters are back in the community free space ( opposite H.Samuel in Bury Street in Abingdon) from 11am – 2pm until October 14th. They have harvested the produce from Edible Abingdon, where spaces near the town centre have been used to grow herbs and vegetables.

Once again they have their apple-pressing kit and pasteuriser which can be used on the premises or hired. Or you can drop in and buy a bottle of apple juice – Made in Abingdon. I read that ‘The price of apple juice is likely to rise sharply after a poor harvest in Poland, the main supplier of apples and apple juice concentrate to the EU.‘

There’s more to pumpkins than Halloween lanterns. Browsing round the shop I found a recipe for Pumpkin Cake with some very easy instructions. For more pumpkin recipes visit Love food hate waste and read about The Curse of the Uneaten Pumpkin.
2017 Fair Round-up

This year there were two evenings with little or no rain. Crowds were probably bigger on Monday

but a lot of people were still out early on Tuesday.

2017 was a good year for doughnuts. A lot of vans were serving them.
The old Bellinger’s forecourt was fenced off and so the first aid ambulances were positioned on the main concourse instead. A Fire Engine was parked behind the Abbey Gateway.

Three Abingdon Restauarnts had an outside presence serving food and giving out takeaway menus.

Maria Lee was not only there for fortune telling, but also there to look after the present state of mind.

The fair will be gone when I set out early tomorrow morning at 6:45. Bins, overflowing with food wrappers, will be cleared away. Rides will have set off for their next venue. Just a few will be staying nearby for next weekend’s Runaway Fair.
Hysteria, Sky Flyer and Meteorite

I’m so tired of working every day
The fair has come. I’ll throw all my troubles away

I’ve bought a token and I’m going to ride
Go for a spin on the Meteorite.

Meet me by hysteria don’t be late
I need to spend some money and it just won’t wait.

Take me on sky flyer, hold me tight
I want to fly some high rides tonight.

There’s crazy people running all over town
Big game hunter’s are marching up and down

I won’t be crazy, I’ll be bright
I will ride on the Meteorite.
Setting up the Fair
Thanks to Steve and Pete for sending pictures.

The fair arrived today and the showmen were blessed with good weather for the task of setting up!

Workers meticulously set up the rides whether they are large and come in many pieces.

or are smaller children’s rides.

By early afternoon most of the bigger rides were nearing completion, including the Sky Ride at the bottom of Ock street. The owner said the ride is two years old and cost £400k. He went on to say as soon as he’s finished setting up here he was going to drive to Nottingham where his late Grand fathers, 1880 Golden gallopers have been thrilling the crowds. Tonight he will dismantle the gallopers, drive them to the next destination, then drive back to Abingdon tomorrow to operate his Sky Ride.
