Saturday in Town

Saturday in Town
The Local Excellence Market had a lot of stalls including a wood turner running a simple lathe with a foot pedal and string.

The Market seemed to be doing well, as did the coffee places. Whether all  the town businesses benefit as well I’m not sure

It seems strange that the newly refurbished precinct is still being touched up. The two large new units are still empty six months down the line.

There were two men scraping the moss from the roof of the Old Abbey Buldings. This week in the Unicorn Theatre The Abindon Drama Club has been performing The Accrington Pals.

Bells were ringing for weddings. The Town Crier was in good voice crying from the County Hall roof, and clearly audible down below.

It was a lovely Saturday. Pictures of the Family Day at Dalton Barracks to follow.

One of the things that makes the LE market different from the others is that local shops can take a stall there if they want – a one-day “pop-up shop” so they can show their wares to a wider audience . Several of them have done that at previous markets, don’t think any were there yesterday but it obviously depends on availability of staff etc. It also provides an outlet for local businesses who can’t afford/don’t want a permanent town centre base.

Hester puts it perfectly; The Local Excellence Market does a great job of bringing the hidden gems out to the Market Place and allowing small companies to trade their wares without the huge set up costs, and commitment, of renting trading space. A great place for some businesses to see of their ideas work and are wanted by the buying public. For others who have sensed that the market stall is the best venue for them then this is another well run and well attended event. Now we just need to work out how to persuade those attending the Market Place events to venture further into and around the town.

Notice two men accessing a roof correctly in the precinct whilst two others decide they can both clamber up one ladder at the same time on a very old roof!
