Work starts on land adjacent to Abingdon Motorcycles

Land Adjacent To Abingdon Motorcycles Marcham Road
Road works are taking place near Abingdon Community Hospital this week. There is an unused plot of land between Abingdon Motorcycles and Abingdon Court Care Home on Marcham Road, and Thames Water are working to supply water to the plot.

The plot was for many years covered by a mound of earth. It is now about to be built on.

A planning application was allowed on appeal for this plot (back in 2006) for a four storey residential development comprising 14 one & two bedroom flats with parking for twelve cars. So my guess is that there will be flats. But there are more interesting rumors that KFC are coming to Abingdon either here, or in the Abbey Shopping Centre.

seems highly unlikely they would put a KFC opposite a Mcdonalds. It would be much more appreciated in the town 🙂 don’t think it would be good for my waistline though!!

KFC definitely want to be in in Abingdon. Just google ‘is KFC opening in Abingdon’. You will see a site called ‘Where we want to be – KFC developments’. This lists all the general locations nationwide they wish to be.
It states they would like to be ‘central – A415’ in Abingdon.

The planning applications appear to relate to the building of flats on the plot, i would have thought the site was to small and surely access would be a pain but they seem to be able to build anything anywhere. Do we really want a KFC ( Kant Find the Chicken)

KFC in Abingdon sounds like another nail in the coffin of this once pretty Market Town. Haven’t we got enough fast-food outlets? Judging by the amount of litter around I would say too many already. No need to put signs up to direct the customer to the outlets – just follow the trail of discarded wrappings, cartons and food remnants.

well, not really – we have mcdonalds – no burger king, no kfc.
not like people will eat 3 times as many burgers with 3 choices.
besides, people vote with their feet – you can’t try to socially engineer the people of abingdon to eat ‘nice food’.

K.F.C. is the only fast food I like. Abingdon does not have a robust litter policy and enforcment so people tend to drop litter at will. If you want something done about litter contact the town council. The plot does not look big enought for flats.

Drive through/restaurant is on their developments page, it could be possibe to connect an exit road into the current structure. (Road that you go down to the Tyre/Wine/Motorcycle units). So in theory shouldn’t have to affect the main road at all. (apart from some sort of entrance).

Just to clarify my point – I was not hinting at ‘social engineering’, merely pointing out (mainly) the ltter problem. Indeed, the Council could be contacted about litter, but extra litter means extra collections and therefore increased Council Tax.

With the traffic problems on this road flats or KFC wouldn’t help. Even with a road past the motorbike place, the cars would still have to try to get out on to the roundabout where all the tesco traffic is.
I just seems to me that the south is overcrowded and maybe it’s time to look to build these developments in the north? There is more space and the roads aren’t anywhere near as bad as in the south.

    Just a thought……

Cassandra do you think there is a big litter problem in and around town? I’ve always thought that Abingdon fares quite well for litter. Yes you can see a bit around the Mcdonalds area but are you saying thats the case for the other takeaways? Some busy nights you can go out and see a bit of a mess but it always seems to be gone by the next time you pass by. I guess that happens wherever young people go out on the town. At the moment places are looking a bit drab with fallen leaves etc but compared to many places I think if one thing can be said for our town is that its kept pretty tidy.

I’m just glad that “they” have chosen to do the roadworks for the water at the same time as “they” have decided to do the roadworks on Bridge Street.

Anyone else noticed the mayhem and massive (more massive than normal) queues?

For a short while I hoped, and even thought I noticed beacons of hope and common sense coming to the fore in general. It was very unnerving I must say.

What a relief when I realised that no such sanity prevailed and we are indeed stuck with the INsanity.

I heard it will be a Nandos from a reliable source. But they’ll probably mess it up like that awful giant window in the high street. Check out my blog ‘Abingdon Truth’ for more information on the whole precinct fiasco.

Daniel, it is also a shame that the works began in the very week that the schools went back. Of course, there must be a rational explanation….

14 flats with parking for 12 cars? Mmm … 2 unlucky so-and-so’s will have to park ……. in Tesco’s, the garage?

Site doesn’t big enough for 14 flats or a KFC!
Looks about half the size of the mcdonalds plot, surely they would struggle to get any kind of drive through on it.
