The Saxton Arms public house should be designated a listed building before anybody tries to change it for the worse. There is a great view of the pub from Reynolds Way.
Saxton Road had a great uniformity when first laid out. The Borough of Abingdon had a plan for the people moved out of the old unfit housing in Ock Street. I think they tried to keep people in the same community from where they came but with more space and better housing. The houses and pub were very uniform at first, but the creation of the Home Zone almost a decade ago has changed that.
People have also transformed their gardens – some with great individuality.
I doubt if there is a better “Borough of Abingdon” sign in the rest of Abingdon.
I hope no-one from Tesco (or Sainsbury) reads this blog – otherwise they might recognise that the Saxton Arms looks quite like the Ox used to and think that it would be a good idea to turn it into a convenience store so that all those folk in the 160 new houses to be built on Drayton Road would have somewhere to shop…

Even the arms on the chairs have tattoos on in that pub lol I once saw a horse on bricks in the street. I can tell you on a serious note though sexton road has changed a lot there are zero burgalaries in houses . i am told by a local estate agent the houses sell faster there than anywhere else in Abingdon
Estates get old and run down and this encourages vandalism and apethy. A face lift is a good thing. An experiment showed that neglect breads crime. If a place looks fresh and looked after then vandals think residents care and will discourage damage and graffiti.
Saxton Road was a no go area when I was a kid. The amount of times I was punched and threatened walking around that area!

The families were indeed rehoused together from courts, mainly in Ock Street. The idea was to keep communities together. Backstreeter – West St Helen St also had slum housing, including the infamous “Paradise Court”.
Estates get old and run down which encourages vandalism and apathy? Seriously? This doesn’t happen with private estates ……. It’s people that make it run down in the first place – nothing to do with age of an estate. If people looked after their properties and gardens in the first place and didn’t fill them with jacked up cars, furniture, rubbish etc and planted flowers and shrubs instead, then it would make a huge difference.
Don’t rely on the Council to fix things all the time …..
