Museum re-opens Saturday

Museum Re-opens Saturday
Thanks to Maggie for this picture of one of the new museum signs, and people relaxing outside Throwing Buns last Saturday. Throwing Buns will also be running Buns in The Basement, the new cafe in the County Hall cellar.

Museum re-opening day is this coming Saturday. The Mayor of Abingdon and Martha Howe-Douglas, star of TV show ‘Horrible Histories’, are to reopen the museum on Saturday at 12 noon.

Maggie also sent me pictures of the Open Gardens event put on last Saturday by the Friends of the Museum to help raise funds towards the  County Hall Museum redevelopment. Three gardens were open in East St Helen Street. The fund raising done by the Friends has been an essential part of the process. Their hard work and commitment has shown the kind of community involvement needed to get money from bigger sponsors like the National Lottery.

Thanks BS for this most informative and absorbing Blog – another Centre of Excellence feature of A-O-T. Like others, it is my first breakfast read. Notwithstanding the building works, the Marketplace looks more appealing every time I come home.

Buns in the basement: Abingdon’s ‘Cellar Club’ – a heavy whiff of 60s nostalgia. Is the old jukebox still there ?

Ah glad my photos were of use! I really enjoyed the open garden event.

Fingers crossed that the weather is as good tomorrow as it was last Saturday. I’m really looking forward to having a look inside County Hall.

I went to the Open Gardens event last saturday and was truly impressed at the work that must go into creating these amazing gardens. Many thanks to the owners of the houses, and to the organisers. What a wonderful day it was.
I also got an oppoortunity to have a ‘preview’ of ‘Buns in the Basement’ last evening. It is super and another qualityaddition to the venues in Abingdon. Best wishes to Phil and Kate…they will make it a very welcoming place.

The Town Hall looks fantastic and it was a pleasure to relax and drink coffee outside Throwing Buns the other day. Felt like another town… Until the traffic invaded my senses!!
One thing though….. Is the Basement cafe going to be open in the evenings?? It would be a shame to miss out on such an opportunity to have a new and interesting venue for socialising and music… Myself, I’ll be bored of sitting in a basement room after a while, if all it provides is another run of the mill coffee shop.. The venue was once a cool little cafe/club, why not make the most of it again???

I’ve just been reminded by a 60’s school chum: the basement caff was then called The Mousehole. In those days, the local Teds used to line up their motorbikes opposite in the Market Place.
