Olympic Gold For Abingdon

Gold for the olympics
There are two competing colour schemes in the civic beds of Abingdon-on-Thames this floral year. There are the Red White and blues for the Jubilee.

There are also the yellows or gold for the olympics. The flowers are from Wick Farm Nurseries on Audlett Drive.

I have seen a couple of shops in town that have created their own versions of the Olympic five hoops logo, and then taken them down before the big day. I hear that the olympics are very precious about who uses their logo and how.

Olympic Gold should be OK.

The torch will be coming through very soon on Tuesday 10 July 2012. Schools and many other local organisations will be out lining the route for this once in a lifetime experience. There could be 20,000+ people along the route in Abingdon with people from surrounding villages and towns.

Did you notice the Olympic flower bed on the roundabout at the lodge hill end of Oxford road ready to greet the torch’s arrival on 10th July?

Sorry to double post but also saw in paper this morning that swan upping is about to start. I remember last year someone complained they didn’t know it was coming so as a bit of advance notice it’s due to arrive (end) in Abingdon on 20th July

Does the Olympic bed look ok, Iain? They were still working on it last time I went past.
And I just wanted to reassure everyone that the Town Council does have permission to use the Olympic rings in the bed!

The flower displays in Abingdon have been particularly lovely this year, and wonderful by the river (near The Anchor). Thanks for the reminder about the date of Swann Upping Iain. Last year I hot-footed back from ‘the North’ in order to catch it. Sadly, I arrived just as they had finished (earlier than anticipated) at the Bridge. May take up position on the river bank earlier this year!!

I was quite upset seeing the empty flower beds Jubilee weekend. I should have realised the gardeners had it all in hand for the Olympics, especially when the torch comes through Abingdon. The containers across from The Anchor are lovely!!

interesting fact… the olympic torch relay isn’t an ancient thing.
it was started by the nazis for their hosting of the olympics – curious that it continues!
