There was a lot going on down at Abingdon Rugby Club as the club celebrated eighty years with a very well organised day combining rugby, competitions, fun for the family, a reunion for past players, music, and a beer festival.
On previous visits I have noticed the ground can get very damp after rain but that problem seems to be solved now. There were no mud splattered players.
Abingdon Rugby Club have been playing at Southern Town Park since 1989, and in recent years have developed a very successful youth program, with lots of youngsters and their parents at the club on Sunday Mornings.
Good to see the seniors for a change, but I wish I could understand the rules.
My brother plays, brilliant stuff, something Abingdon should be proud of
My has played for Abingdon RFC for 8 years since coming to work here. He thinks it is a wonderful club. I was there on saturday and it was a great day…lovely friendly, enthusiastic people. Abingdon should be proud of this organisation.
Definitely – and the coaches are brilliant with the kids, and put in so much time. My son plays there for the under 9s – he only started last year and has been made to feel so welcome. He loves it and his game is coming on nicely (proud dad comment 😉 )
Soccer has rules….rugby has Laws!
Thank you for posting, I played for the club while living in the town.
I understand that Club member Paul Murphy has a important role at rugby union HQ, a proud claim for the town and club!
What a great day out! Friendly atmosphere, something for all age groups and possibly the best BBQ food I have ever seen at this sort of event. Roll on the 81 year celebrations!
Best event of ther year. Where else can you watch 2 excellent rugby matches (U15’s and Seniors) for free whilst enjoying a fab BBQ. All in wonderful sunshine. The friendliest rugby club in Oxfordshire by far.
I’m certainly hoping this will be an annual event in the town rather than having to wait another 80 years!!
The whole day was organised so well that there was always something to see or do for the kids and adults. As previously mentioned there was some great rugby, really outstanding food, fantastic local real ales and an all pervading atmosphere of fun, friendliness and humour.
Well done Abingdon Rugby club, you showcased your sport and your community links in fantastic style !!
It was fabulous to see the local community come together to celebrate a little bit of Abingdon’s history. It was an extremely well organised family event with something for all. The atmosphere was great and the BBQ food and guest Ales’ brilliant. I can’t wait to see what the club has in store for the for the Rugby 7’s tournament on 19th August, I will defiantly be there!
It was a fantastic day, above and beyond anything we’d hoped for. Thank you to everyone involved. Just a note, the Abingdon RFC 7’s Tournament is on Saturday 18th August and not the 19th as previously mentioned. We look forward to seeing you all there.
