Pedal Power was started on the Vineyard in Abingdon in 1979. I bought my bike there many years ago. The bike – a Dawes – is still going strong with minimal maintenenace. I sometimes return to the shop, for a new tyre, innertube, or pump.
There is now an online home for Pedal Power and I see it has a quote of the month.
Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving ~ Albert Einstein
If you worried about falling off the bike, you’d never get on. ~ Lance Armstrong
Nice to see a plug for an independent shop away from the town centre – to remind ourselves that that even if something isn’t available in town itself there are alternatives to the retail parks. Two that come immediately to mind are the motorists spares shop on St Johns Road (maybe not the cheapest but sure beats trekkng over to Halfords in Oxford!) and of course Knights on Ock Street when you just want two screws of a particular size, not 150, or you want to speak to a knowledgeable person. I am sure others can add more.
Hear hear! As a newcomer to Abingdon, and moving into a new house, I had lots of stuff to buy. The staff at Knights were absolutely wonderful and so helpful. Big plus, it is just a short walk up the road for me. (I actually live closer to the retail park but Knights win hands down for service and advice, and the facillity of buying small quantities.)
Love Pedal Power! Since I’ve moved away they service my mum’s bike and she’s still using it now she’s 83 and I know that any work done is quality.
Remember Knights too – next best thing to the late lamented Beadles!
What was that camera shop/art suppliers next to the alleyway on Stert Street? Loved it! The livestock market!
I could go on…
Camera shop was Ivor Fields I think.
I still miss Beadles, it was my absolute favorite shop of all times and one of the reasons I love the Two Ronnies ” fork ‘andles” sketch.
Knights is great and beats the big DIY shops on every count.
Wow, thank you for your lovely comments, I’m the son of the owner at Pedal Power and have come on board to keep the family business running. Good to hear the old man has done a good job all these years and hope I can live up to him for many more to come. Stuart
The other hidden jewel in Abingdon is Hedges on Queen Street. Never any left overs in our house when we get a Hedges joint for Sunday lunch
Can’t forget masons 🙂 Everything you could ever want and need for textiles.
Great thing about the webpage, however shame it not “Pedal Power Abingdon”…
Does the bloke who looked a bit like Kilroy still work there?
I use to shop in this shop with my parents for parts for my bike and now I shop in here for parts for my children’s bikes.
Keep up the good work,
Knights also take the Choose Abingdon card.
Not to mentiion 2 really good bookshops, an excellenr patisserie and a superb stationers!
Let’s not knock Abingdon all the time!

As well as the few independent pubs and the restaurants!
Ah, Pedal Power. We used to get all our bikes from there. I remember buying model aeroplanes and tanks there as well! What a great little shop 🙂
I had a new bike from there when I was 11 because I was starting Senior school. It was 1979. You can work out my age now!
Really pleased to see they’re still there.
My son works there occasionally – lovely employers. It’s a little gold mine in there. Excellent service. Everyone – keep shopping there!!!
