The bus stop at the top of Stert Street has been shut for a few weeks now. The stop is used by the Abingdon Town Bus service on its route round and through Abingdon. The barriers stretch some way beyond the bus stop, and also have the effect of not allowing people to cross the road before the designated crossing.
The notice at the stop says “Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience.” The our in this sentence is Oxfordshire County Council who must have their reasons but no reason is given.
Has there been a serious incident at or near this stop ? Are they just checking out whether the traffic will run more smoothly without a bus stop? Does work need to be done on the path?
Somebody will know.
I think it might be because of a water leak that needs repair.
I saw there was a problem in that area when I checked the Thames Water website. We had very low pressure a few days ago – but that was a burst main in Welford Gardens.
I believe that the “tunnel” that the river Stert runs through is crumbling under this stretch of the road.
But hibernating bats are preventing the work being done from inside the tunnel until the spring. Then it will be ”to the bat cave Robin!”
Notice for this is on the county council web site, end date is end of June !
Forgot the link, its here
Shiver me timbers! Pete laad … we be smugglin’ non-Greene King grog thro’ Stert conduit an’ disturbed a few bricks. Aye.
Thats where Johnny Depp was then.. LoL 😉
Does the tunnel lead out of Abindon? That’s the only direct I would want to smuggle Greene King beer!!!
My source also says the Stert culvert is unwell and in danger of swallowing a passing bus. I hope it gets dug up and we get a look at it. There were bridges across the stream to the houses on the abbey side of Stert st.
Just been in meeting with OCC traffic officer who confirmed issue is with culvert, Pretty much as described above, meaning it might not support weight of traffic so needs to be repaired.
He didn’t know anything about bats so suspect that may be a Chinese whisper – he did suspect that there will be a few rats down there!
I see the barrier is still there, so much for work being done by end of June 2012!
