Going down

County Hall Progress
For the last couple of days workers have been dismantling the scaffolding over the roof of the County Hall.

A temporary lift is being used to bring down the scaffold poles – one load of upright poles can be seen in this picture.

The hole for the more permanent lift is progressing well.  Next stop … the basement.

More pictures, soon.

I might be mistaken but was there once some sort of premises underneath the town hall many years ago? it was closed down and eventually filled in? Am I getting my wires crossed?

I have vague memories of a subterranean coffee shop there in the pre-Beatles era, complete with Juke Box. Later viewed as Abingdon’s version of ‘The Cavern’.

Not quite the cavern, but new film just out called ‘anyone can play guitar’ about the oxford music scene out today. Looks at abingdons own radiohead among others – including tolulah gosh and the anyways who I remember watching back in the eighties – ah halcyon days of thrashing guitars and anorak music 🙂

The plans for the County Hall have been available for about two years. The whole of the cellar is being refurbished. One area to house the water pump, the second to host a cafe and the third, furthest away from the entrance, an area for educational purposes. Also, the area being dug out will include a disabled toilet. Obviously, the ‘lift’ will be in the corner nearest in the picture above, that is, nearest the Punch Bowl.
