Making it Safe First

Initially the new owners of the Kings Head and Bell, Foundation Inns, are making it safe structurally. Old broken timbers and plaster work are being carted away in skips.

Its a great old building.

There is a lot of work needed, but it is good to see work has begun.

Thanks to Salma for the last picture.

Excellent, thanks for that. It must be among the oldest of pubs in Oxfordshire then. Certainly plausible for those two to have enjoyed the facilities. Shakespeare may have popped in for a pint of sack on his way to London…!

It was certainly there in the 17th century – legend goes that Charles I stayed there but I'm not sure there is any proof of that. (Handel is also rumoured to have stayed there). Have seen one reference to it as 16th century, but again nothing definite. Hopefully one of the more learned local historians will give a more accurate reply!

I've only been in this pub the once, and really enjoyed it. Cosy log fire, wood beams, good ale. I hope they can get the same ambience…

Anyone know how old it is?
