Movable speed indicators have been in Abingdon for nearly two years, but this is the first time I’ve seen one working so close to a long-standing speed camera. This is on Audlett Drive in Abingdon, where the limit has recently changed from 40 mph to 30 mph.
While I watched for a couple of minutes, all the cars were at or under the 30 mph limit.
Which works better: the carrot or the stick?
Are the Gatzo cameras still in use?
I like the speed indicators, if my speedo says 30 they say 27 so I tend to go a bit over, then they dont ususally prosecute if you’re less than 10% over so you could do an indicated 33 on the sign, which is about 36 on your speedo. Also I have gone past speed indicators using cruise control and doing a perfectly consistent speed but as I go past the sign the indicated speed changes, so I have my doubts about their accuracy. If it was now and again I would put it down to variables, but it’s consistent and repeateable.
There is also the indicator on the South bound Oxford Rd near the junction with Norman Ave. It triggers a red warning if the detected vehicle is exceeding 20mph, but the speed limit there is 30, the 20 doesn’t start for another 50 yds
Not around here. No film.
I think that the Oxford Road/Norman Avenue SID is in effect acting as an early warning device. The same thing happens on the A415 as you near Marcham. Sometimes, SIDs suggest that the limit is being exceeded but they appear to be registering a following vehicle. Variations may be due to your (my) vehicle leaving the SID’s camera range.
I think that carrot is better than stick. But sometimes carrot is seen as easier to ignore since it doesn’t issue a penalty notice…
just think of all the money spent on 20mph signs that could have been used towards fixing the potholes, occ havent a clue
Perhaps you should stand for the Council and sort it out instead of moaning all the time.

I agree, but that’s another argument 😉
Put the limit back to 40 and ignore the camera it doesn’t work.
