The Vale of White Horse District Council (VWHDC) will close the Cattle Market car park to vehicles and pedestrians from November 11th, 2024.
The closure, lasting up to twenty weeks, will allow for an archaeological survey, followed by improvements to the car park, including:
* Layout
* Resurfacing
* Lighting
* Creation of a garden to soak away rainwater and improve biodiversity.
There are alternative VWHDC car parks, including:
* Civic car park
* Audlett Drive car park
* Abbey Close car park
* Rye Farm car park
* Charter multi-story car park (limited access)
* West St Helen Street (long queue to get out if traffic is bad in West St Helen Street).
Is this really a priority when councils are short of funding?
Thank you for this Backstreeter, your blog is an extremely useful and excellent at letting people know about the local area.
With regard to the car park works this is great news, although with Christmas being a key time for struggling retailers and Waitrose being especially busy at this time you would think it makes sense to postpone the works until just after Christmas to try and reduce traffic congestion. I know this is too much common sense!
I’m glad they’re doing an archaeological survey. Apparently this was the site of the lay burial ground for the Abbey in medieval times.
Only in the UK can it take almost half a year to do this. It’s embarrassing.
Now that they have found bones will this delay the work
