The volatile price of hotel rooms, petrol and diesel

I looked to see if I could book a room to find out when the new Abingdon (A34) Premier Inn would open. The earliest date I could book was October 6th, and the price was very reasonable. However, the price increased a lot on October 7th.

The Russia-Ukraine war significantly impacted petrol and diesel prices in the UK. In the immediate aftermath of the Russian invasion, prices rose rapidly due to concerns about the global oil supply, peaking in July 2022. They came close to £2 a litre and have since come down.

Supermarkets across the UK cut diesel prices in July 2023, making diesel cheaper than petrol at supermarkets for the first time in a decade.

The Government are pushing for an app that people can search the price of petrol on and find the cheapest supplier. I have been told that the price of petrol is cheaper in the Didcot Tesco to the Abingdon Tesco.

There is already an app. It’s called ‘Petrol Prices’. It shows Sainsbury’s Didcot at 143.9 for petrol there.

Can’t believe the Premier Inn (and Hilton Garden) prices in early October! What’s on in those weeks apart from the fair to make them hike the prices so? If you can’t book months ahead, it’s a nightmare.

I’m afraid Premier inns have become increasingly over-priced. We now use Booking.com and can find good hotels and love!y bed and breakfast guest houses, offering free cancellation up to 24 hours beforehand at a similar cost or less. Breakfast is usually included in the price and we don’t have to look out over a busy main road as is the case with most Premier Inns
