Glendale

We are not talking about the Yorkshire home of Postman Pat, but Abingdon’s very own Glendale. It is a shop that sells electrical goods in West St Helens Street.

(This picture borrowed from Abingdon Walks). You can go in with a problem, and they’ll know just the part you need, and have it in one of the little drawers or boxes behind the counter. Or if not, they can write it down in their little order book, and order it, and phone you when it is in. It carries on in an old fashioned sort of way.

Life is difficult at present because the Co-op next door is closed for rebuilding, and so fewer people need to come down their way. More people nowadays order electrical goods on the internet. They appear to be a couple of men, who are buying and selling the things that interest them, but really they need somebody to help make the window display sparkle, and get more punters in.

Have you any idea what is going into the old Co Op funeral building?
I know you mentioned it in an earlier post, but I can’t find it now and can’t recall if you said who/what was going in there, but the pace of building works seems ot be accelerating (at last).
    thoroughly enjoy your blog…

The new shop is now open. It’s a rock and crystal shop run by Time-Out and the manager(s) are well-known Abingdonian Steve and his Dog!

    Hi The Beep,

The co-op will present new designs which will slow up the process but this could lead to an improvement. Then again as the Herald editorial said it could lead to a bland design. Lets hope for an improvement.

    Hi zzapper,

Good luck to Steve and his Dog! I looked in this evening and the shop looks good, but a difficult location .

I was asking about the shop three or four doors down from the Co Op site: the one that has the new glass panel and used to be a funeral parlour. Next to the photographers. Any ideas?

I arrived here too late to know what the old plans were like for the Co Op but gather it was hideous. All I know is I am desperate for it to open,a nd for an alterntive to Summerfield which is old and dirty and out of place in 2006.
