I went for a walk this May Morning in Abingdon after watching the Virtual May Day Morning from Oxford. It contained a fascinating history of May Day celebrations put together by one of the Oxford Waites.
Fabulous Flowers’ flower containers shone in the early morning sun. For any in the florist trade it must be a nightmare trying to guess what will happen in the weeks and months ahead.
On the far side of The River Thames some adult geese were shepherding their young.
They were a little wary but not aggressive. The fabulous views of Abingdon can be seen beyond them.
There are many good viewing points for seeing St Helen’s Church around Abingdon and beyond.
The main parish church seems to have been placed to help direct people from afar.
The deprived areas deaths data seems to be correct in Abingdon. South Abingdon have had 5 deaths from corona virus and peachcroft only 2.
Thank you, Alastair, for your beautiful and cheering pictures. You are helping us so much with your positive attitude.
Have to agree, that’s a smashing set of photos today. Thank you!
Janet, I really don’t know how you can arrive at that conclusion from such a tiny number. Not all, in fact hardly any, of south Abingdon is a ‘deprived area’ (whatever your definition and statistics of that is) and North Abingdon has its spots. There are so many other factors at play here.
Why don’t we just admire the lovely pictures this thread is about instead of talking off the top of your head.
The photography of this blog is outstanding, but the blog is more than a picture show. The pictures and their introduction provoke us to reflection and comment.
It is this combination of the photography and comment which I find compelling. Thank, as ever, to Alastair. Thanks, too, to those who comment – even those who talk off the top of their head. They add spice and relish to the dish!
Janet, I’m not sure how you arrived at your ill informed assumption that South Abingdon is a ‘deprived area’ but if we are going to cherry pick data may I counter you observation by saying, and probably using the same source document (Daily Mail article) that Ascot has 1 more death and using your logic and prejudice Ascot is hardly a deprived area!
Backstreeter please continue your excellent work in providing a welcome distraction and interesting observations of our local area.
excellent photos as always …keep up the wonderful work
I love looking at them here in my nice semi detached house in South Abingdon with a lovely view of the meadow;
Great photos Backstreeter! I do feel the view from my superb detatched house in North Abingdon provide the best view in the town however.
Howard, you must live in the town hall then, a beautiful detached property with stunning views over Abingdon…
I live above a record store, not sure who this other Howard is. Busy celebrating my birthday anyhow.
Oh no that’s embarrassing, I’ve been talking to the wrong Howard- Happy Birthday, hope you enjoy the bouncy castle in isolation
