Nags Head change of ownership and winter refurbishment

Nags Head change
Dusham took over, and then refurbished, the Nags Head in 2012, and ran it until August 2019. He often carried out winter upgrade work. As a result the large island beer garden has been transformed. The Nags Head has its best months in the Summer with the River Thames and Nags Head Island being big attractions.
Nags Head change
The Nags Head has been taken over by Brakspear. The name Brakspear rhymes with Shakespeare and originated with the Brakspear Brewery in Henley-on-Thames. They have 130 pubs.
Nags Head change
The Nags Head is closed for refurbishment during the winter months.

I don’t think anyone voted for the closure of H Samuel in Abingdon.

What’s more, I don’t think the store is closing as a result of Brexit. The cause is more likely to have been the fact that many people now shop online and the jewellery chain has found the diminished footfall into its shops makes it uneconomic to keep all of them open.

I imagine that high shop rents may also have had something to do with it.

Neither of these factors has anything to do with Brexit.

Meanwhile, I hope the Nag’s Head continues to offer a place for people to enjoy a pie and a pint by the river. Good luck to the new landlords.

I used to go to the Nag’s Head, sit in the garden with a plate of whitebait, salad and a glass of wine (prepared in a hut in the garden) – then new owners took over. They only wanted to sell overpriced pizzas and steak to tourists.

The below coupled with changing shopping habits re the closures, its a mix I think its fair to say.

I seem to remember the Nags was a horrible place to go before Dursham took over. Lovely in the summer months now and nice beer and cosy fire in the winter, but no whitebait I guess so you can’t please everyone.

Looking forward to seeing the referb and the odd, heaven forbid, out of towner spending their money in Abingdon !

H Samuel are not renewing their lease.. So the nearest store would be Witney, I suppose.

Only visited the Nags Head one time, when a group of us walked the path to and from Oxford…Never eaten there. Phab Club departed from Nags Head Island onto a Salters Steamer. Lifting wheelchairs over concrete, and boards to lift onto the Steamer a task in itself.

Janet, if you look at the blog of January 8th you’ll see the news that H.Samuel is closing. You’ll also see a very helpful comment from Hester listing all the places you’ll still be able to buy jewellery in Abingdon.

I do hope the Nag’s Head remains a good place to sit by the river to enjoy a snack and a drink. Our Australian friends loved it, watching the life of the river pass by. Good Luck to it in the future.
