Kingfisher Canoe Club members – clearing the river

clearing the river
Kingfisher canoe club members were out on the River Thames in Abingdon on Sunday – litter picking.

Jen says “It’s amazing how much rubbish, in particular plastic, we picked up from such a short stretch of river that is a hazard to birdlife and fish and everyone who enjoys the river and its banks!

There is also a picture of Tigger who Jen rescued from the river a little while ago.

I do hope that the club are successful in finding a site after being evicted from their old site. It is my feeling that the residents of Abingdon have been shortchanged in the dealings of the Vale. Outside organisaitons have been given priority over local residents.

Janet : We have been short changed by all 3 Councils, complain and you’ll get the pay-up or shut-up line, they have the perfect excuse.

It’s a process of Abingdon being looted to finance some Vale ‘Bigger Picture’, which, as we know from experience, will be an indulgence of some local politician’s ‘Blue Sky Nincompoopery’.

As an aside, the other morning, circa 09:15, I drove to Didcot, out along the Drayton Road, and the traffic was tailing back from the Spring Road/Ock Street double roundabout, right passed GridLock East and into Drayton.

Any new houses built along this road and beyond will not be suitable for people wanting to get up at a reasonable hour expecting to get to work on time. Only retirement properties should be built.

Where is a Traffic Planning Genius like Dimmo Smith when you need him?

Newcomer…I think you are referring to “nimmo-compoopery”.

I raised a “Fix My Street”.com issue about the double roundabout farce…and after many months of no body claiming responsibility or interest in the issue – the issue being the gridlock and dangers to school children all to be alleviated by the crossings debacle – you raise the issue on the website and it gets forwarded by magic to the relevant body for resolution; after many months they (I think OCC) simply closed the incident as ‘resolved’ saying that nothing can be done.
What would happen if everybody raised a NEW fixmystreet issue – not added to an existing one – but created a new issue, raising concern at the weight of traffic being poorly managed and the ensuing dangers to school children etc, and how consultants were given money to sort this, but failed….etc etc. I wonder if someone, somewhere sees the dozens and dozens of issue coming in at one particular location?

Anyway. This won’t be an issue when AbITS finally delivers the second River crossing at South Abingdon – again that the consultants we paid for advised. Also…none of this will be affected by the additional housing in Drayton. Or Steventon. Or Sutton Courtney. Or 3000 in Culham. And…lest we forget….getting 1000 houses North of Town will have no impact at all as everyone trapes accross town to head south on the A34….or bring their kids to the OFSTED good rated schools here…

And anyway…what are those developments in the scheme of 1000s at The Barracks yet to come?

Of course…we may get another “infrastructure after development” promise…which will be nice, and keep us quiet a bit longer. The promise that is…not the fruition. Although, perhaps our MP will write a strongly worded email…that should do it. I’ll feel better about it all knowing our (most recent) MP was totally ignored as well.

But then…we should have more faith, we did manage to get a bus stop shelter moved. And we were asked what we liked about town – although saying you wanted to keep the community use of current assets was discouraged it seems.

Personally, kittens are fluffy, it snowed in December, and so everything is rosy – especially in these spectacles…and there’s more then enough coffee to go round – no matter the development, so that’s a relief.

Merry Christmas one and all. I look forward to another year of discovering new and innovative ways of Abingdon being screwed over. God bless us, everyone!
