A Chinese Consortium are in talks to buy Abingdon Bridge as part of a deal that will see a second bridge across the Thames in Abingdon.
The plan is to charge tolls on both bridges to finance the construction.
It is understood that the second bridge will be called The MG Bridge – MGs being a car once made in Abingdon and now made in China.
Spokesman Yew Gon Laf told me: βIt will bring many tourists into Abingdon attracted by the Chinese built MG bridge, and the new Hilton Hotel in Abingdon.β (This hotel was announced in Thursday’s Oxford Mail.)
Mr Richard Turpin, a spokesman for the Highwaymens Agency said “Clearly this is the only way Abingdon will ever get a second bridge, as we will not stand and deliver such a bridge.”
This is an outrage…. No consultants brought in to pontificate? What’s to stop them taking it away and installing it in China???
Can i rally some support here…no…we shouldn’t allow it..we are holding a demo there at 12 today…all holding hands and singing Bridge over troubled waters…please come along and join us….
I heard the plan was they would be dismantling the old bridge and relocating it as a crossing point over the Yangtze.
Presumably this is an April fool! HA HA!
had me until I came to “spokesman Yew Gon Laf”. Brilliant
I like the idea of a Highwaymens Agency… which is a thinly disguised excuse for a brief hijack of this thread to remind readers that today from 10-3 the Environment Agency have a drop-in exhibition in the Community FreeSpace about their Flood Alleviation Plans for Oxford and their impact on Abingdon.
Nice one!
Thanks, made me laugh and reminded me of the day
Excellent, many thanks !
Shows what odd times we live in however when I was prepared to believe it up to the second paragraph.
Sorry – I pasted the tears of joy emoji but the comment doesn’t like it. π
