The Charter in Abingdon has an area of overground walkways with archways beneath. It is a fascinating area, and when it rains young people often congregate under the arches.
The Charter dates from the 1970s and since that time stalactites have started to form where water runs down and deposits minerals from the ceiling.
There might also be stalagmites growing up from the ground, but people have worn away those accretions.
Talking about water. The Oxford Flood defense scheme will be in the Abingdon Community Free Space, on Saturday 1 April, 10am to 3pm (information will be on display in the Community Space from Monday 27 March) I hope they are right in that the proposed flood defense measures around Oxford do not push the problem further down stream to Abingdon.
Has anyone noticed that the Old Goal is now advertising Serviced Holiday Apartments?…they look very nice sorry to get off the subject
What a horrible, grotty, disgusting area….. Gives a really good impression to anyone coming into the town for the first time from the multi-storey car park. Why isn’t the Vale holding Scottish Widows to account for this? Either make them pay up for the promised refurbishment…or terminate their agreement!
Like your use of the word ‘accretion’!
Wait for 100,000 years and these stalactites will be drawing thousands of tourists. We just need a long-term plan…
Ppjs….and only *after* that will we get the Lodge Hill interchange.
Still, if you look through the arch you can see that the plants look lovely. Job done.
thought i was the only one to ever notice those – must be something in the building material.
Given that the dreadful overhead walk way isn’t much needed why not knock it down ?
I miss the fish pond …………and the nightclub!
Walking under there last week whilst shopping I passed a group of youngsters who’d gathered to smoke pot …… lovely feature of Abingdon.
Everyone has their own way to escape, Houdini….
