Armistice Day 2016

A two minute silence is held to mark Armistice Day when after four years of fighting in World War I, the end of the war was marked on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

At Eleven O’Clock this morning the Town Crier rang his bell and traffic came to a halt for a two minute silence at Abingdon war memorial.

There were a group of pupils from Thameside School along with their Deputy Head. Over a hundred people had gathered around the war memorial – far more than the much smaller gathering you would have seen ten years ago. People were there to remember those killed in two World Wars and the British servicemen killed or injured since 1945.

Alongside the Mayor, Councillor Alice Badcock, is Stan Bradford who served in WW2.

Thanks to Elizabeth for the last two pictures.

Sorry folks, me again, that’s Stan Bradfields with Alice, he proudly displays his medals and so he should, he was a gunner on Lancasters in WW2 , a task that only a few survived!
In recognition of his achievement the Loose Cannon Brewery aptly named a new beer after him. Gunners Gold.
We salute you Stan and all the other Abingdon Heros !

Black flag, the service is not just for his generation, it’s for all our Heros who served us and paid the price by making the ultimate sacrifice whatever the conflict, it also serves as a valuable reminder of just how pointless war often is ?

Norway got lots of help from England in 1940-1945, so THANKS! My grandfather had hidden a radio up in the mountains and listen to our king and others who were based in England during the war. ( The German soldiers told everyone that it was forbidden to have a radio…. !)
