The pathway connecting the Ladygrove Estate, in South Abingdon, with Tesco has long been an issue. It gets very muddy, and at times is flooded by the River Ock.
A few years ago the Tithe Farm and Ladygrove Residents Association tried to see if Tesco would help fund improvements to the path. Nothing came of that suggestion, and I see on the TFLRA blog that they have not had much luck with the Vale of White Horse Distrct Council earlier this month … “Last time we said that the Vale Property team were inspecting the state of the footpath from Ladygrove to Tesco’s. Afterwards, they said that they thought it wasn’t in too bad a state and that a few dips and ruts were to be expected.“
Pity about this, wouldn’t sustrans help out with funding? Why not ask the green gym to get involved ? That said surely it would only take a couples if loads of cinders or type one and a team of volunteers with barrows and shuvels ?
The photos do not bring home the full extent of the damage to the path, Work to carry out repairs is well beyond any volunteer group however enthusiastic. Has ownership of the pathway been established? is it a public right of way?
If Tesco were to help out then maybe more people from the estate would cycle or walk across. This would be more business for Tesco and less traffic on the Drayton road.
who does it belong to? – they should fix it or close it.
The footpath is owned by the Vale of White Horse District Council.
Poor construction techniques. – Try the towpath
between Eastern Bypass and Iffley Lock. Far worse than
this footpath.
The sub base is not porous and the surface is laid flat.
Did we not learn anything from the Romans.
Maybe simply drilling some deep holes and filling with gravel may help.
Does anyone know if this is a footpath, a cycle path or both?
It seems to me part of the problem is caused by cyclists using a path which has not been designed for bicycles.
If it is a footpath then maybe cyclists should be discouraged from using it?
If it is a cyclepath then it needs to be upgraded and probably widened – as it does seem to be an accident waiting to happen with cyclists, dog walkers and shoppers using the same poor quality narrow path.
I’m surprised that given its (largely undeserved) reputation for social responsibility, Tesco doesn’t cough up to modernise this path and send out regular teams to repatriate the trolleys in the Ock. This would cost a tiny fraction of its still considerable profits and do a good deal for its reputation.
Silly question but has anyone actually asked Tesco?
I used the path yesterday. Puddles and mud pretty much the entire lenght of it.
